A nice little climbing spot, but it can easily be bypassed by a small path.

"Lord Jesus, eternal Word of the Father, you have become silence for us. And in the silence that leads us to your tomb, there is one more word that we want to say to you when we think back to the Way of the Cross that we walked with you: Thank you! Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the gentleness that overthrows arrogance. Thank you for the courage with which you took up the cross. Thank you for the peace that flows from your wounds. Thank you for giving your holy Mother to us as our mother too. Thank you for the love you showed in the face of betrayal. Thank you for turning tears into smiles. Thank you for loving everyone without excluding anyone. Thank you for the hope you pour in in the hour of trial. Thank you for the mercy that heals misery. Thank you for laying aside everything to enrich us. Thank you for transforming the cross into a tree of life. Thank you for the forgiveness you offered to your murderers. Thank you for conquering death. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the light you have ignited in our nights, for reconciling every separation and thus making us all brothers and sisters, children of the same Father in heaven." (Prayer for the Way of the Cross with the Holy Father, Pope Francis, Good Friday 2023)

8월 18, 2024, Castor Cave
As mentioned before, the path is no longer maintained. In addition to the vegetation, the steep slope and loose rock are particularly problematic. In many places it is also difficult to see where the path goes (the path is not marked on any digital maps) and it is easy to get lost on the impassable slope. It is very dangerous to walk on and therefore not recommended. The Castor Cave is also more of a large niche in the rock and not really worth the risk of fighting your way down there. There should be clearer warnings at the Kompus-Käppche about entering the cave, or the path should be repaired, as the cave is advertised on a sign and there is only a tiny note saying that the path is closed.

Officially 'steep path' and that describes it much better. Even if there are elements that are familiar from via ferratas, the overall experience is more of a demanding, partly exposed and quite steep hiking trail in passages with clamps/ladders. Hardly anyone will have equipment here (except perhaps for children) and anyone who has a little experience of via ferrata can walk through here comfortably.

The via ferrata from Zell to the Collisturm is one of the most difficult via ferratas on the Moselle. In addition to safety ropes and step bars, steep ladders and crossings on pins await you.

At the end of the Stations of the Cross there is a neo-Gothic chapel, built in 1856, and several different memorials and places of prayer. A bright statue of Mary surrounded by a cave-like shape in the rock, overgrown with ivy and a kneeling supplicant below thanks the Blessed Mother. According to the inscription, it was placed there in 1954. https://www.kuladig.de/Object-View/KLD-245669

7월 12, 2021, Slate Mining Tunnels on Strimmiger Berg
At the tunnel entrances in the split huts (some of the ruins are still there today), the slate blocks were split into thin slates (layers). The material that cannot be used as roofing slate (“deaf rock”, in some cases over 90% of the extracted material) was deposited in heaps in front of the tunnels and thus allows conclusions to be drawn about the size of the tunnels. In the last months of the war, the slate tunnels served the population as protection from air raids. Today the tunnels are closed with grids because of the danger of collapse, but bats provide welcome protection for wintering. The spoil heaps are an ideal habitat for heat-loving species such as snakes and lizards.

7월 12, 2021, Slate Mining Tunnels on Strimmiger Berg
After the Prussian government had banned traditional straw roofing in the 19th century because of the high risk of fire, roofing slate gained economic importance on the Strimmiger-Berg. The municipalities granted mining permits to individual operators, who in turn employed farmers as day laborers and thus enabled many men to earn additional income until the early 20th century. Horizontal tunnels were manually driven into the mountain in order to break slate blocks and to bring them to the surface with the help of carts. The tools that were available for this were only hammers, chisels and saws, the only light source in the tunnels was carbite lamps. It was therefore a very laborious and very dangerous job, to which there was no alternative for many large families.

The way from the Kompus cap to the Castor cave or the Castor cross is no longer officially released. This part of the "boxwood hiking trail" used to be, but it is now different. The path is partly overgrown and buried by rubble and ends on the Moselle in an underpass of the crossing railway line. Enter at your own risk! The text on the information sign at the Castor cave, which is difficult to decipher, reads: "Many legends are told about Saint Castor, the best known is that of the salt miracle. Salt was a precious commodity at that time and was weighed against gold. When Saint Castor still lived in his cave, he had a garden on the river bank with vegetables "Flowers and medicinal herbs grew. One day a ship laden with salt sailed upstream. A rumble of thunder announced an approaching thunderstorm. St. Castor offered the boatmen a pinch of salt. They only had mockery and ridicule for him. Then a huge one rose Thunderstorm and the ship threatened to overturn. In their distress the pagan sailors begged St. Castor for help. The saint knelt down and prayed for the people who had just mocked him. The storm and ship and crew miraculously subsided were saved. To commemorate his work, a large cross was erected near the cave in the years that followed. "
