It's a shame that so much rubbish and leftovers from a "camp site" were simply left lying around here. There are other ways to be close to nature. Otherwise it would be a really great place.

On the right hand side there is a "trail" that leads down to impressive sandstone cliffs. Very impressive. And there is also a dwelling in the cave.

With a door, 2 double beds, sleeping mats and a small seating area. What more could you want? According to the guest book there, the sunrises on the plateau are recommended. I wonder if there is a reservation website for this place 😁. The cave itself is somewhat hidden a little below the actual path.

From a topological point of view, the Thommen mining area is very homogeneous, since the mining areas did not develop depending on the epoch, but the mining centers remained topologically the same over the entire funding period. The origins of Thommen slate mining can be found in the area of the Sattelberg. At least since the end of the 17th century, two main mining areas were important for Thommen slate mining. On the one hand the districts "Heckenberg" and "Hesselnbüsch" bordering on the district "Sattelberg" and the adjacent district "An der Köpp", on the other hand the actual "Thomerberg" with the adjacent district "Brasilienberg". Until the commercial restructuring of mining in 1863, these areas remained the main extraction areas. After 1863, Thommen slate mining concentrated almost exclusively on the "Thomerberg" and the adjoining "Brasilienberg" with the various large mines. Little changed in this constellation until shortly before the First World War. The most productive pits by far, such as the pits "Mertesnaf I", "Mertesnaf II", "Neue Mertesnaf", "Mertesnafergraben" and "Alte Graebenkaul" were located on the natural border between Thommerberg and Brazil Mountain, the so-called "Mertesnafgraben". .

Huge, open cave! The information board gives you a rough idea of how people used to live here. Unfortunately, not every visitor takes their rubbish with them :-(

The Genoveva Cave is located high above the Kuttbachtal on the southeastern slope of the "Elterlei", which carries in its northeastern foothills the stronghold. In the scree in front of the cave, a scraper has been found, which already suggests a use of the cave of people of the later Atlas period. In the rubbish dump were besides prehistoric, several times also Roman and Franconian shards. The interior of the cave contained a number of smaller huts. The built terrace could be reached only with ladders, knitting or climbing woods. The beam holes and beam supports with the desired regularity are still clearly visible. The widest extent of the cave is about 15 m, the ceiling is about 8-10 m above the floor surface. To the outer wall, the cave increases to tiered stone layers. The steps to the cave were cut out of the rock 1910 by the local group Kordel of the Eifelvereins. The Genoveva Cave is linked to the following legend: "Genoveva was the wife of Count Palatine Siegfried, and when he went to war his governor Golo tried to seduce the beautiful countess, but she remained virtuous, and in revenge he accused her of infidelity and claimed that she had received the child from Siegfried Siegfried then ordered his wife to be killed with the child she had borne him in the meantime, but the hunters who were supposed to kill Genoveva and the child in the woods had compassion The hunters brought Siegfried the eyes of a dog instead of those of the countess, Genoveva and her child found refuge in the cave named after her today, feeding on the fruits of the forest and the milk of one Siegfried soon regretted his decision and fell into deep sadness, and over six years later he came across the Hir with his hunting party He tracked her and came to Genoveva's cave. The count was overjoyed to find his wife and son again. He took her to the castle, and the evil Golo was quartered. However, the years in the wild had weakened Genoveva so much that she soon died. "

Short hike through two million years of earth development and history. Very good for children and finally fill up cheaply in Luxembourg. Access via A 64 to Luxembourg. L.G. Heinz Zell Krewer
