The castle was built in 1724. It was named after its later owner, the Austrian Major General Baron von Kupperwolf, who acquired it after 1758 and remained its lord until the end of the century. It was destroyed by troops of the French Revolution in 1794 and subsequently rebuilt. Further renovations took place around 1888. An information panel providing a historical overview has since been installed at the castle. You pass through here along the Palatinate Hut Tour. Starting at the St. Johann parking lot, you'll get your first fantastic view of the Trifels.

You wouldn't think that this was once a castle.

“In 1764, the foundation stone was laid for the castle, which was built as an official residence for the Scharfeneck lordship by the Princes of Löwenstein-Wertheim. [...] The building was built on the site of the Penitentiary Monastery, founded in the 13th century and closed in the 16th century [the monastery church of which was opposite: see today's "Archaeological Park "Monastery Church of St. Johann"]. The castle remained in the possession of the Princes of Löwenstein-Wertheim until 1793, was then auctioned off as national property and passed through various owners to the Badische Anilin und Sodafabrik (BASF) in 1913.
