The Altrhein Maxau Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in western Karlsruhe, located in the area of the Old Rhine. It is surrounded by the more recently established Burgau Nature and Landscape Conservation Area. The nature reserve covers approximately 35 hectares. It is situated in the Knielingen district of Karlsruhe and encompasses the northern part of the Knielinger See, a former gravel pit lake. To the west, it borders the fields of the Maxau estate. To the north, it is bordered by the Winden–Karlsruhe railway line. To the east, the reserve borders the Leimengrubengrund, part of the Karlsruhe city forest. The nature reserve adjoins the Burgau Nature and Landscape Conservation Area. While Burgau became a nature reserve in 1989, the Altrhein Maxau area was designated as such in 1980.
