Since the beginning of 2020, the Hambach branch of the Palatinate Forest Association (PWV) has also included a large shelter in the Ordenswald forest. It is prominently located directly on the 28-kilometer-long Palatina Cycle Path between Neustadt and Speyer. With its numerous indoor and outdoor seating options, the shelter is the ideal rest stop for such an excursion. The shelter was built by the former Lachen-Speyerdorf branch of the PWV together with the Neustadt branch of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and other volunteers; it was inaugurated in August 2018. Because the Lachen-Speyerdorf branch of the PWV dissolved at the end of 2019 and merged with the Hambach branch, the shelter became the responsibility of the Hambach branch.

The shelter is located at the entrance to a peaceful forest. You can be buried here in the forest. It's also beautifully quiet here, the shelter is practical, and has a charming name. A wood carving of a squirrel is within sight.

This shelter, also known as the pensioner's hut, was built in 1969 by the then mayor Karl Bettag. It is a popular resting place for hikers and cyclists and offers a nice opportunity to take a break and enjoy nature.

There are two guest rooms. When the weather is nice, there is still space outside under the shady trees. There are Palatinate specialties, changing daily specials, various types of coffee and home-made cakes. There is also draft beer from a local brewery and delicious Palatinate wines from the Meckenheim wine region. There is a large playground for the kids. A disabled toilet, a changing table and circular paths suitable for strollers. Private parties can also be organized.

Large refuge with lots of seating. Almost resembles a public barbecue area. Very nice for a long break.

This is not just a simple shelter, this is a full-blown resting place for many people. There are several seating options and tables outside and in the hut. Everything was set up on a voluntary basis and financed by donations. There are no trash cans, so please take the trash with you. Further information as a notice at the hut.
