The tour of Europe's only gemstone mine was very interesting. Even the dogs were allowed along.

The copper ore mine on Schloßberg dates back to the middle of the 16th century. It took 20 years to work on the search tunnel. After about 28 meters the copper core was exhausted. Behind the gated entrance stands a statue of St. Barbara, the patron saint of miners.

The Schloßberg spring rises approx. 12 m inside the Schloßberg. It was set in a stone basin and ensured the Naumburg's drinking water supply, including the stately wine house, until the 18th century. From then on, for unknown reasons, the yield of the spring decreased so much that the residents of Naumburg had to rely on the water from the Bärenbach flowing in the valley. The spring still runs as a constant trickle all year round. Source: http://www.baerenbach.de/Freizeit/Baerenroute/Schlossbergquelle/

The path leads through two consecutive rock breakthroughs. But be careful, the headroom is very limited.

As of April 2023: Great and interesting tour. Prior registration is currently mandatory, so don't just drive there and hope that you can go into the tunnels. Toilets, a small kiosk and a sale of gemstone products are available at the entrance. It is also great for hiking around the tunnel.

It is actually surprising that the topic of "dry wall" is the subject of an information board, while a little off the hiking trail at the end of a path a tunnel opens up that leads to a widely branched mine. In addition to protecting the bats, this may also be the reason why a grid prevents further access after about 10 meters. From here, however, you can already see numerous tunnels leading downwards, upwards and to the side, which are only poorly secured or not secured at all, so that one can quickly sink into the bottomless holes filled with water. Exploration would be exciting but potentially very dangerous. The wood found in the Bierfinckgraben mine allows the mining activity to be dated to three periods around 1500, around 1700 and 1750. The Steinkaulenberg Gemstone Mine is the only mineral mine in Europe that is open to visitors. I was surprised at the amount of gemstones to be seen in the mine's galleries, so I highly recommend a visit; However, you have to register online or by phone in advance. The path through the mine takes about 1 hour and is barrier-free and therefore easy to walk on. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the mine.

The Gemstone Mine is the only open-to-visit visitor mine in Europe. Expert guides explain how the gemstones are formed. Opening times are from March to November daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You should register beforehand. We found it very interesting. The temperature is 9 to 10 degrees.

The show mine, uncovered and made accessible in 1975 by the Association for Fossil Friends. In 1988 it was structurally modified so that wheelchair users can easily visit the mine. The historic Herrenberg slate mine is an unusual attraction on the “Hunsrück Slate and Castle Road”. It impressively conveys to the visitor the work of the miner and opens up the world of fossils from ancient times. Mines and widenings inside the mountain lie one above the other like terraces. Fantastic quartz veins alternating with gray-blue slate rock create images of unusual rarity and structure - abstract art of nature. Shiny gold pyrites in the walls and stalactites that have formed on the ridges impress with their genuine beauty and naturalness. Hand-picked tunnels and quarries testify to medieval mining skills, old documents report digging in the 16th century, but there are reasonable signs pointing to slate mining from the Roman era. Fossils, those relics from unimaginably distant geological ages, indicate life around 350 million years ago. Many revealing fossil discoveries have been recovered to this day and are represented in well-known museums around the world. The Bundenbach Fossil Museum is right next door.

Caution, bow your head when you go through this rock tunnel. One of the many nice changes on this dreamlike dream loop.
