The Eichener See (popularly known as Eiemer See in Alemannic) lies above the Schopfheim district of Eichen in the Lörrach district and is a karst lake that only appears intermittently. The lake only has water when the groundwater level is high and lies in a hollow (shell limestone karst basin). It has no surface inflow, the outflow occurs partly underground and partly through evaporation. Geologically, it is a sinkhole that is temporarily filled with water, in which groundwater comes to light, especially after the snow melts or after long periods of rain. In dry phases, the ground distance (difference in height between the groundwater table and the earth's surface) can be up to 40 m; The deepest point of the trough that stores the groundwater is around 48 m below the earth's surface. The background to the strong fluctuations is the cavities in the Dinkelberg, which is mainly made of shell limestone, which can fill with water very quickly due to a groundwater backup, but only empty again slowly. The walk around the pond is really worth it. Almost half of it is designated as a bathing lake. We had nice weather at the end of October, but it was too cold for swimming.

With a length of around 325 meters and a width of 200 meters, the Nonnenmattweiher is not particularly large, but it is really beautiful to look at. Here you can swim in peace and at the same time enjoy the Black Forest in all its glory, unfortunately it is quite crowded on the weekends, but during the week it is a little paradise.

I would have liked to have seen the lake today, but the groundwater level has probably dropped so much that it disappeared again. Still an idyllic place for a rest!
