Maidenhole At around 1000 m above sea level. NHN on the northeast slope of Lemberg lies the cave or crevice known as Jungfrauenloch in the White Jurassic rock. The name can be traced back to a local legend. Around the year 1170, the county of Hohenberg, to which the district of Gosheim belonged at the time, and its lord Burkhard I of Habsburg were mentioned for the first time. Around 1230, the future Roman-German King Rudolf I of Habsburg married the daughter of Count Burkhard III of Hohenberg, Gertrudis of Hohenberg. Her loyal Gaus, also known as “Gotso” in Middle High German, carried out the planning tasks and the organization of finances for her. The name of the community of Gosheim is said to have come from Gaus. After marrying Rudolf von Habsburg, Gaus stayed with the countess' niece, Gertrudis von Oberhohenberg, for whom he also managed the business excellently. But the young woman's brother was so angry and jealous about the popularity of Gertrudis and Gotso that he set the castle on fire at night in the absence of Gotso, who was hunting. Only Gertrudis is said to have escaped the terrible fire with all her jewelry and money and is still hidden today in the “Jungfrauenloch”, a deep crevice in the rock on the Lemberg. Only a key word can free her from her captivity to the dark forces. The story of Gertrudis von Oberhohenberg and her loyal friend Gaus is performed every five years as a village play at Fasnet. There are also legends surrounding the so-called “Giant Forest” on the Lembergsattel. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemberg_(Schw%C3%A4bische_Alb)

As you climb past the cave, you have no idea what a special place on the Wenzelstein is....

Worthwhile summit a bit off the direct path from Lochenpass to Plettenberg.

Bring a flashlight for Wenceslas Cave. The first 3 m are still possible. But after the left turn, the cavern narrows and you can only crawl to the end.

Wenzelstein Castle was built around 1050. It belonged to the Lords of Winzeln, who were relatives of the Reichenau monastery bailiffs. It offers a wonderful view of the Upper Schischem valley. The Wenzelstein, a rock on the south-eastern slope of the Schafberg, with its steep rock walls secures the castle square. The surface is divided into two roughly equal areas: the front area and the 8 m higher area of the former core castle facing the mountain side. The two areas are separated by a cliff. A 3 m deep cistern, which is 2 m in diameter carved out of the rock, can still be visited. The Wenceslas Cave, a 13 m long cave on the footpath to the castle, is also worth a visit. Definitely worth taking with you on a hike, the Wenzelstein.

Interesting cave - with a little climbing skill you can enter the cave approx. 10 meters - then through a small opening you will probably go further into the rock - only the bats know more about it. The front one Part of the cave was probably used by Stone Age people - at least stone, bone and ceramic tools were once found.

The little detour on our hiking route led us to this beautiful place. Very few hikers have got lost so far. We have discovered a fairytale forest with mossy tree trunks, wonderful shady trees and very beautiful views in all directions.

Not only the Wenzelstein, the whole area between Lochen and Plettenberg could be rated as a highlight. The typical melange of old beeches, rocks with viewpoints, the lovely juniper heather and the outstanding landscape points have an effect on the hikers. I personally like the caves in particular. Even if the small cave below the Wenzelstein is one of the less spectacular, it rounds off the overall impression of these places.
