The beautifully situated refuge is not very inviting, looks unused and has plenty of patina inside and out.

1월 8, 2026, Brandshof Shelter

The Brandshof shelter is idyllically situated near Wendthagen-Ehlen in the Bückeberg hills and is a popular rest stop and meeting place for hikers, walkers, and nature lovers. Nestled in the wooded, hilly landscape of the Bückeberg, it offers a tranquil spot to linger and relax amidst nature. The shelter is located on several well-maintained hiking trails and is often used as a starting or ending point for tours through the surrounding mixed forests. From here, numerous scenic features of the region can be discovered, including springs, old quarries, and viewpoints overlooking the Schaumburg region. Besides providing shelter from the elements, the Brandshof shelter is also a meeting place: the local tourism association and hiking groups regularly use it for joint events and social gatherings. Thus, the Brandshof shelter uniquely combines experiencing nature, relaxation, and community, and is an integral part of the leisure and hiking opportunities in the Bückeberg.

The "Mittleres Bruch" observation point is located directly on one of the most beautiful sections of the "Landtour Bückeburg" (Bückeburg Country Tour), as well as other popular cycling routes. From here, you have an uninterrupted view of the fascinating flora and fauna of the wet meadows and floodplains of the Bückeburg lowlands. With a little patience and luck, you can observe various, even rare, bird species "at work." A detailed information panel on "Bird Species" provides even non-experts with the necessary specialist knowledge. Tip: Bring binoculars and/or a camera with a suitably large telephoto lens! It's worth it. This will make your bike ride or hike a truly special experience.🍀🌟

40 years of the Brandshof refuge: 1996 was almost the end. In its 40 years, the Brandshof refuge in Wendthagen has experienced numerous storms and celebrations - and was almost demolished in 1996. At that time, the nearby quarry was to be expanded - but the people of Wendthagen were able to save their hut. "The Hutewald is a cultural-historical form of management with shepherds," explains the responsible district forester Heiko Gropp. Background: Hute forests were widespread in Germany from the end of the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century as designated areas in which the inhabitants of the neighboring villages were allowed to graze pigs, sheep, cattle and goats. With the advent of planned forestry, the old rights were replaced by monetary payments, land swaps or annual allocations of so-called loose wood to the village population by the forest administration. Back to the Hutewald concept: Browsing undergrowth and young trees favored certain tree species, such as the oak in Taubenberg, which is why the typical sparse forest picture developed. This in turn should serve to protect species and provide habitat for light-loving insects and specific plant communities. Likewise the stag beetle or forest birds such as the middle woodpecker. The Karlshütte is a great place for a break or as a shelter. There are several seating areas for a rest both inside and outside. The original Karlshütte dates from 1962 and was completely rebuilt in 2018 in the same location. The Karlshütte is currently (2021) in excellent condition.

Resting opportunity right next to the goat enclosure. A little "neglected";) but still a great place to rest, even for a larger group.
