According to the sign, the ponds could date from the 13th - 16th century. The ponds were filled at this time. This means that dams were built where the water could collect conveniently in depressions in the landscape. Fish farming was also a big topic for monasteries like Speishardt and Waldsassen. A special guest in the nature reserve is the osprey, which breeds at the Großer Rußweiher pond during the summer months. There are only a few breeding pairs in Bavaria. At the Oberseedamm, you can experience the unique birdlife even better with a free spotting scope.

There is another hut of the same design at Häusleweiher. This hut stands among the trees on the tar road of the dam. Unfortunately, the interior of the hut has been vandalized. A good camera and/or binoculars may be useful here.

The dam was closed to traffic today (Sunday and public holiday). Here you can take a nice stroll. Between large and small soot ponds there are benches and a telescope to admire the birds 🐦.

The north and east sides are more beautiful, as the paths are more natural. To the south, a terrace separates the Großer Rußweiher and Kleiner Rußweiher ponds. To the west, a gravel road without direct access to the lake joins the trail. There are beautiful viewing platforms and benches.

Very nice nature reserve and bird sanctuary, here you can see some rare birds. The bird sanctuaries "Großer Rußweiher" and "Eschenbacher Weiherkette" are among the oldest and most valuable nature reserves in Bavaria.
