The nature reserve includes the water area and the silting zones of the basin pond east of the village of Weiherhammer. Together with the ponds to the southeast, the basin pond was part of a kilometer-long chain of ponds. It served to equalize the supply of water for the gunsmiths founded at the beginning of the 18th century. The pond is fed by the Haidenaab, which flows into the pond via the Brandner Canal. Today the area is an important habitat for waterfowl and an important stopping point for bird migration. A special feature is the black-headed gull colony, one of the largest colonies in northern Bavaria. Accessibility: An educational hiking trail leads along the Brandner Canal to the Beckenweiher and the nature reserve.
