I am very surprised and impressed by the size of Wilhelmsburg, Fort XII; I hadn't expected that. The 200 m x 130 m castle was built between 1842 and 1849 as the centerpiece of the Ulm Federal Fortress. The citadel could accommodate 6,951 men, and the inner courtyard covers 1.3 hectares. The history of its post-military use is also interesting. Everything is well documented on site.

The Ulm Fortress Trail initially leads through the spacious grounds of the Wilhelmsburg. The construction site at Prittwitzstrasse/KönigWilhelm-Turm can be bypassed on a narrow (but sometimes slippery) path.

Beautifully situated in the forest with a great circular path and path into it. Very well preserved and highly recommended. 👍🏻

The back part of the fort is particularly exciting. There you can walk around the old battlements. But be careful, nothing is lit or secured there. Access at your own risk.

The visit is worth it

Fort Albeck was built on Saffronberg between 1846 and 1859. There was room for a maximum of 1,340 soldiers. It is the largest external fort of the Ulm federal fortress complex.

Leipheim Castle is a three-story, high-rise, Renaissance-style saddle-roof building, with the ground floor dating back to the 11th century. It is elevated on a steep mountain slope on the western edge of the town of Leipheim in the Günzburg district. The coat of arms of the Lords of Güssen is depicted in the southeastern gable of the castle. The round tower, attached to the south of the castle, has a convexly domed spire. The castle is surrounded by a walled front garden and a stately castle wall with several round towers, each with a concavely domed spire.
