He lived at a time when poaching was commonplace in the Stauden region. 19-year-old Blasius Stotz, caught poaching, was fatally shot by a hunter not far from Itzlishofen. This shrine in Bibersee near Eisbrünnele commemorates his fate.

Beavers are true landscape architects: they build lodges and dams, dam streams, and fell trees. Germany's largest rodent is perfectly adapted to its aquatic habitat, even though it only spends a few hours a day there. Its shape is streamlined to reduce energy consumption in the water. Its compact build has a very good body surface-to-volume ratio, which reduces heat loss. On land, the beaver often appears clumsy and awkward, but its fast sprints and climbing skills, such as scaling steep banks, are underestimated. Beavers fell trees to obtain food and build dams and lodges. As vegetarians, they eat the tasty young twigs and buds from high in the treetops, as well as the bark in winter. They prefer softwoods such as willow and poplar. These fast-growing pioneer species sprout again after a short time, and the "clear-cutting" allows light- and heat-loving animal and plant species to colonize the open areas. The animals build their beaver lodges from the larger branches. To protect themselves from predators, the entrance is always submerged. When the water level is insufficient or fluctuates too much, the beaver builds dams to raise and maintain the water level. This increases the water surface and reduces the flow velocity. With these "beaver ponds," the beaver creates important habitats for many plants, fish, amphibians, insects, and birds. At the same time, the banks are reinforced, silting of rivers is prevented, and flooding is mitigated. Trees and trunks left behind by the beaver increase the deadwood habitat in the area. The Schnerzhofer pond was bought by the Schöffel family, a textile entrepreneur, and is used for pond farming. The pond is occasionally drained in winter. In summer, you can swim in the pond. There is also a small lawn with a toilet and a bathing jetty on the north bank. Despite the overflow gap being rebuilt in 2008 for half a million euros, the floodwaters washed over the top of the pond in June 2024.
