Beautiful ravine with information board

Unique ravine. Larkspur blooms here in March. Wild bees have drilled small holes in the vertical sand walls.

The Spatschlucht was formed around 1800, when the above-ground mining of heavy spar, also known as barite, began. The white spar powder was used as an additive in the manufacture of paint and paper. All in all, barite was successfully mined in the area for almost 140 years until 1939.

In the Stadtwald Hemsbach district "Kreuzberg" around the "Förster Braun Hütte" or the Langer Grund car park, you will always find sunken paths that have larger loess layers. On the upper edge of the paths, you can marvel at adapted, almost 200-year-old beech trees, which have extremely increased their root growth towards the edge of the slope. You have to look for something, but you'll find it just under 200 m north-east of the parking lot.

Not far from the road is this small gorge, which is definitely worth a visit. The two entrances are a bit impassable. Still a nice highlight and a great photo spot.
