Charcoal burning is an ancient craft, now almost extinct, but in the past it was a crucial factor in the industrialization of entire regions: The blast furnaces of the iron and steel industry, for example, relied on charcoal to reach the operating temperature necessary for smelting ore. As a consequence, however, entire regions were once completely deforested by charcoal burning, and it is only thanks to later reforestation efforts that forests have regrown and nature can be seen again.

Sayn Abbey (abbatia Saynensis) is a former Premonstratensian monastery in Bendorf-Sayn on the edge of the Neuwied Basin, on the right bank of the Rhine between Neuwied and Koblenz. It was founded in 1200 by Count Henry II of Sayn and settled by Premonstratensian canons from Steinfeld Monastery. In May 1202, the abbey church was solemnly consecrated by the papal legate Guido von Praeneste. It was dissolved in June 1803 as a result of the Imperial Deputation Act. Since then, the abbey church, which is now under the patronage of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, has served as the parish church of the Roman Catholic parish of Sayn in the parish community of Bendorf. We hiked there with elementary school 50 years ago on hiking day. :-)

An extraordinary hut with lots of information boards, a guest book and places to rest in and in front of the hut.
