The Altenburg Castle Church was built in 1748/50 as a baroque transverse church, since the castle chapel, built in 1355 and dedicated to Saint Barbara, was destroyed in the Hessian War in 1647.

Altenburg Castle was built around 1178 as a hilltop castle by barons.

The castle courtyard is freely accessible at all times.

Count Gottfried V of Ziegenhain had a castle built between 1246 and 1271 on a rock that extends far into the Ohm valley and is located on a main traffic route with a ford through the flat Ohm. The castle was destroyed shortly after its completion by the nearby Hessians, but was rebuilt between 1307 and 1311. In 1450, the Gemünden castle and the Ziegenhain inheritance passed to Hessians and became the official residence. In the 16th century, further buildings were built, including the still impressive tithe barn in 1566. In 1756, the house was rebuilt. A characteristic half-timbered storey with strong, convexly curved struts was built above a massive basement with two blunt-pointed arch portals.

The whole slope is an excellently maintained… beautifully landscaped garden… fruit cultivation… herb and flower beds… very finely labelled

Burg-Gemünden Castle is a medieval hilltop castle on a 241 m above sea level basalt cone above the Ohm in the Burg-Gemünden (Burggasse) district of the municipality of Gemünden in the Vogelsberg district of Hesse. The castle gave the town its name.
