Charcoal burning is an ancient craft, now almost extinct, but in the past it was a crucial factor in the industrialization of entire regions: The blast furnaces of the iron and steel industry, for example, relied on charcoal to reach the operating temperature necessary for smelting ore. As a consequence, however, entire regions were once completely deforested by charcoal burning, and it is only thanks to later reforestation efforts that forests have regrown and nature can be seen again.

Saved my day once when I tore my lateral ligaments while running... kind-hearted walkers who were sheltering from the rain got their car and drove me home. Thanks again!

It's really beautiful up to the Köppel. The path is narrow and you can hardly get past the hut from the side. You have a beautiful view of the swan pond and it's great to watch the people. :D Binoculars are recommended! You have to be careful of the numerous broken trees. I would advise against doing this if it's windy.

I thought the Meilerhütte was really great! This refuge has a lot of space.
