In summer you can find numerous butterflies on the floodplain meadows. There are also rarer species such as the dark-breasted bluebird, whose caterpillars develop in ant nests. The “Mainaue bei Augsfeld” nature reserve is an important European breeding area for native bird species and a resting area for migratory birds. Rare and typical floodplain habitats and animal species of European importance are also still widespread in the area. Natural, nutrient-rich lakes have formed in the area of former river loops, which were separated by the dynamics of the river. But such contrasting habitats as fens and dry sandy grasslands can also be found alongside riparian forests and meadows. Bird species such as the sandpiper, little ringed plover and the great egret feel at home in this varied area. An adventure trail enables ideal observation of this rich bird world.
