This castle has been restored for a long period of time with a lot of love and expertise according to monument protection criteria.
It's always a pleasure to watch. It is surrounded by a moat, hence the name moated castle.

Worth seeing are the so-called Gaden, which were built in the 12th century as a refuge around the fortified church.

ANGELIKA

5월 2, 2025, Gadenkirchenburg and St. Andreas Parish Church

The Gaden (forts) surrounding the church in Oberstreu are a gem that transports the viewer to another world. Even though the current ensemble is smaller than it was in its heyday, it still gives an idea of how the fortifications once protected the Oberstreu residents from enemies and how life in the village was then. According to an information panel at the Gaden (forts), after the village was relocated in the 11th and 12th centuries, a tower, a small church, and a cemetery emerged from the flood-prone Streu lowlands. Initially, these were only enclosed by a wall. However, the walls were soon raised, and storehouses, known as Gaden (forts), were added from the inside. The term comes from Old High German and means something like "parlor" or "chamber." The defensive power of the complex was increased by the church tower and a defensive tower in the northern row of Gaden (forts). Unfortunately, the complex was destroyed in 1553 during the so-called Margrave War. However, the stone portals on the doors, dating from 1557 to 1591, show that the Gaden were rebuilt after the war. At the latest, they had cellars underneath. (info MainPost)

A romantic moated castle in Unsleben. A beautiful photo opportunity from all sides. The remains of an old tower and a moated castle can still be seen. The castle is on the list of the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.

The Salzburg is privately owned and cannot be visited from the inside. However, you can access the inner courtyard and the small church. In the inner courtyard there is a restaurant (Italian) and parking spaces for their visitors. You can walk all the way around the castle from the outside. You will always have beautiful views of the castle, but less of the surrounding area.

Very beautiful castle complex with a circular path. Unfortunately, it cannot be visited as it is inhabited. However, there are public tours https://www.bad-neustadt-erleben.de/event/salzburgfuehrung/2024-04-25/ And the Italian restaurant in Salzburg is highly recommended https://www.bad-neustadt-erleben.de/anbieter/o-sole-mio-restaurant-auf-der-salzburg/

Unsleben Castle is one of the region's most important cultural monuments. It was first mentioned in documents in 1160. Since then, it has had and continues to have an eventful history, shaped by art (the two famous painters Hugo von Habermann, the Elder and the Younger, were well-known) and by different owners who have left their mark on the property over the centuries. The result today is a unique building in which very different styles have been realized. The castle is still inherited family property. It is privately inhabited and yet at the same time opens its doors to guests who want to spend weddings, holidays and contemplative moments here.

History Early Middle Ages The Salzgau around Neustadt was already very important under the Carolingians, and a palace was even built, which Emperor Otto III gave to the diocese of Würzburg in the year 1000. This palace was probably located on the site of the present-day village of Salz or in the immediate vicinity. A protective castle for the population of the surrounding area was probably only built on the nearby Veitsberg in the Ottonian period because of the Hungarian invasions. In place of today's Salzburg there was probably a rampart of unknown date. This defensive structure could also have been expanded into a Hungarian refuge in the first half of the 10th century. The first written mention of Salzburg is in a document from Emperor Louis the Pious copied around 1160 in the Hessian State Archives in Marburg (K425. Kodex Eberhardi, fol. 82r and v). The original document is lost and could have been written by the copyist, the monk Eberhard from the Fulda monastery.

In the fall of 1836, the Westphalian baron Werner von Haxthausen stayed in Bad Kissingen for a cure. During a short tour, Haxthausen also visited Salzburg. The following year, the nobleman, who had become wealthy through marriage and was, among other things, highly educated as a philologist, acquired the nearby Neuhaus estate, which also included a third of Salzburg. At that time, healing springs had been developed in Neuhaus. The baron probably already planned to expand the estate into a private bath when he acquired the estate. At that time, the remains of the medieval chapel that Haxthausen examined could still be seen in the castle courtyard. Because of the historical significance of the place, he decided to have a church built there again and consecrated to St. Boniface. It is said that the saint consecrated the wandering monk Burkard as the first bishop of Würzburg at this point and also installed the first bishops of Eichstätt and Büraburg there. The diocese of Würzburg supported the reconstruction plans. The initiator donated the building plot and prepared the laying of the foundation stone. King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who elevated Haxthausen to the rank of Bavarian count, appeared in person on July 12, 1841 to lay the foundation stone of the new castle chapel and raved about Salzburg. At the same time, this Salzburg Festival celebrated the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of the diocese. The first designs for the new castle chapel were drawn up by the Royal Bavarian Construction Office in Würzburg. The king actually preferred Gothic, which he viewed as the “only true German style.” The royal chief building officer August von Voit (of Salzburg) finally revised the designs in neo-Romanesque (Byzantine) forms under the influence of Friedrich von Gärtner. Construction management was entrusted to the Neustadt master mason and stonemason Michael Stapf (1814–1875; chairman of the “Patriotic Association”[2] founded in Würzburg in 1869). The Würzburg sculptor Andreas Halbig made the sculpture decoration. Financial difficulties and the death of the founder Werner von Haxthausen delayed the completion of the church, which could only be consecrated seven years after the foundation stone was laid on October 7th and 8th, 1848. From Wikipedia: The late baroque hall church was built in 1773-76 to a design by Heinrich Todesco. The nave is covered with a hipped roof, the church tower attached to the east with an onion dome. The patronage box was added to the south of the nave. It has a connecting passage to the castle. The interior was designed as a transverse church, the altar is in front of a longitudinal wall. The organ with ten stops on a manual and pedal was built in 1776 by Franz Ignaz Seuffert.

The Karolinenweg leads around the Salzburg, the castle itself is in good condition and can be viewed free of charge, in 1893 Theodor Gutenberg became the sole owner of the castle, in the years 1927-31 the Salzburg was used as an open-air stage and after the World War by the Americans used as a radar station. Today the Salzburg is once again the home of the Gutenberg family

Unsleben Castle in Lower Franconia is one of the most important examples of a Franconian knight's seat in Bavaria. It is located on the northeastern edge of the village of Unsleben (Rhön-Grabfeld district) in the floodplain of the Streu River. The mill ditch branches off from the Streu, feeding the castle moat and flowing around it. (Source: Wikipedia)
