The last of the five round towers of the restored city wall served as a prison in the 17th century. It is a wonderful place up here at the ruins of the castle, which was probably built in the 13th century, later converted into a landgrave's palace in the 16th century and unfortunately destroyed in 1646 during the Hessian War. I liked it here in the wonderful summer weather so much that I made two sketches to help me remember this moment even better.

All buildings are located on the early medieval castle complex of Kesterburg. However, excavations have provided evidence of a very early Celtic settlement in the area of the ramparts and the entrance was located here.

The tower was built in the 13th century and originally served as part of the city's fortifications. In the 16th century, the tower was used as a prison for witches. It is believed that around 100 women and men were executed as witches in Kirchhain during this period. In the 18th century, it was closed as a prison and later used as a warehouse. In the 1970s, the tower was restored and opened as a museum in 1978. The museum tells the story of the witch hunts and the role of the witch tower. The museum also has exhibitions on medieval torture devices and witchcraft.
