The watermill on the Goldbach stream is demonstrably the oldest mill in Hagen a.T.W. It was first documented in 1273. In that year, Gerhard and Agnes "de Gelenbeke" gifted an annual rent from the mill to the monastery in Iburg. The mill belongs to the Meyer zu Gellenbeck farm. Where the residential building now stands, there used to be an oil mill, a beet mill, and a flax mill. The oil mill was still operating during the First World War. The Gellenbeck Mill is actually a double mill: behind the weir of the millpond, on either side of the Goldbach stream, are two mill buildings. The building on the left bank is used as a residence, while the building on the right bank, after extensive restoration work by the Association for the Preservation of the Gellenbeck Mill, is once again used as a grain mill (powered by a turbine) for occasional demonstration milling. A waterwheel has been reattached to the residential building, intended for use in generating electricity.

Great view

The third attempt took me all the way to the top, despite my fear of heights and with the support of my husband. As a reward there was a great view in wonderful weather. 😅
