10월 3, 2025, Sera Monastery
We were also here with a group. Very young monks... one always seems to be the teacher... one standing, one student sitting. The restrooms are very unhygienic. I found the constant begging for pilgrim jewelry stressful.

6월 12, 2024, Drepung Monastery and Tsokchen Temple
The monastary has six major temples, also three colleges for the study of buddhist philosophy, and one for the practice of tantric buddhism. At its peak the monastery housed 10000 monks. Today it is only a couple of hundred monks at the monastery. The Tibetan people think that under the control of the Chinese government the Buddhist teachings have lost their independence and spiritual credibility. These monasteries have been re-established in India in the 1950s. It is a pity, because this large complex is oddly empty and quiet.

6월 11, 2024, Canggu Nunnery
Canggu Temple is a rare nun monastery. The entrance from the street can be easily missed. Upon entering through the gate a courtyard surrounded by three-storey buildings opens up. Centerpiece of the temple is the Thousand-Handed Bodhisattva. It is certainly a unique place for female Buddhists.

6월 11, 2024, Steps to Potala Palace
A must visit when in Lhasa - and probably the key reason you came to Lhasa in the first place. Visit requires prior reservation (your guide or travel agaency will likely take care). After passing a security check and the ticket check, you have to climb many stairs up to the palace. With the high altitude and exposed to the sun, this can be very exhausting. Take it slowly! Potala Palace is the symbol and landmark of Lhasa as well as Tibet and a sacred place for Buddhist pilgrims across the world. Thirteen floors and 115m high, this hillside palace was built in the early 7th century when Tibetan King Songtsan Gampo married Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty . It mainly consists of two parts, the Red Palace and the White Palace. The Red Palace is where religious rites are held, while the latter is the monks' living quarters. Be prepared to be overwhelmed by Buddha statues, murals - and many many tourists.

About a 15 minute taxi ride north of Jokhang Temple is Sera Monastery, a large temple complex that includes a large assembly hall, three schools (or colleges) and numerous other buildings. A key highlight is the Debating Courtyard, in which the monks spend time every afternoon from 3pm to 5-ish to have teaching debates. The monastery was established in 1419, but severely damaged during the unrests prior to the Dalai Lama’s exile in 1959.

6월 10, 2024, Princess Wencheng - Musical Play
Princess Wencheng is a musical (opera like) play in Lhasa, depicting the proposal, travel and marriage of Tibetan emperor Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng, related to the chinese Tang Dynasty. During the summer months it is set on an outdoor stage with the mountains surrounding Lhasa as a backdrop. It is a massive spectacle with hundred+ actors on the stage at times, plus goats, cows, horses and more. It is enjoyable to watch and teaches a little (glorified) history. It is recommended to bring a warm jacket or coat, as it can become a little cool once the sun has set. Princess Wencheng was second wife to Songsten Gampo. The marriage was arranged to foster a union between Tibet and China. She and his first wife, Nepali princess Bhrikuti, are considered manifestations of bodhisattvas White Tara and Green Tara. Both, Wencheng and Bhrikuti, assisted Songtsen Gampo with government affairs, but have also been largely responsible for the development of Buddhism in Tibet. Princess Wencheng oversaw the construction of the Ramoche Temple in Lhasa.

6월 9, 2024, Ramoche Temple
Ramoche Temple is actually a monastery. It is located a little north of the old town around Jokhang Temple and can be easily reached walking down Ramoche Road. The temple was built by Princess Wencheng and is considered the most important in city - right after the Jokhang Temple which is considered the most important in Tibet. The inside of the temple is covered in fine, detailed and intricate paintings. Temple visit requires a small entrance fee.

From the lower entrance quite a number of steps up to the actual entrance to the palace. Take it slow at this altitude, and bring protection against the sun.

6월 9, 2024, Jokhang Temple
The temple entrance is about 100m west from this point, across the square. The Jokhang is considered the spiritual heart of Lhasa and is the most sacred in Tibet. The most valuable thing inside is the statue of 12-year-old Sakyamuni, that was brought to Tibet by Princess Wencheng from China. It is located at the Barkhor Square in the center of the city. It is recommended to have a prior reservation or online ticket purchase, e.g. via the WeChat mini-program. It also offers, unlike others, a good English language interface. Tickets can be purchased from 7am the day prior. Tickets are for entry in a selected time slot. I strongly recommend to go with a guide to explain the history, art, religion, importance of the building, statues and murals. When arriving at the temple, the tourist entrance is on the right. On the left is the (free of charge) entrance for the worshippers and pilgrims, but it is a long, slow moving line. Inside the temple the two are kept separate, but it can still get crowded and stuffy inside. Built in 640 by mostly Nepalese artists and craftsmen, it today consists of a Tibetan Buddhist Temple and a school monastery. Following the war in 1792 the Chinese emperor did not allow Nepalese worshippers to visit the temple anymore and it became an exclusive Tibetan temple. During the Cultural Revolution the temple was attacked by the Red Guards and no worship was possible for a decade from 1966 onwards. The temple was renovated from 1972 to 1980 and became UNESCO World Heritage in the year 2000.

A small Tibetan Buddhist monastery beautifully located on Huxin Island in Basom Lake. It was built around 1400 and practices in the Nyingma tradition. The monastery is now a home to a few nuns. The temple is centered around Guru Rimpoché. The statue, along with others, have been destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, and have recently been restored. From the entrance of the Basomtso Scenic Area the shuttle bus stops here.

6월 8, 2024, Basomtso Scenic Area (巴松措)
Basomtso or Basomgcuo (巴松措) is a lake in Tibet at an altitude of approximately 3500m. The lake and its surrounding is sacred to the Ningma School of Tibetan Buddhism. A small monastery is located on Huxin Island in the lake. The lake boasts with a wonderful azure color, magnificent landscape and amazing views. A visit is only possible with a tourist entrance ticket. Foreigners also first need to check in at the local police station with their passport and special Alien Travel Permit. A shuttle bus will take tourists from the main entrance to the Huxin Island stop. Walks are possible along the lake on a boardwalk, or up to a viewing platform, to the monastery, or you can choose a boat tour.

A little closer to Lhasa and a little smaller than Drepung. Known for its library and printing press. Many wooden tablets are kept here. The special Tibetan paper is made from the root of the eyebright. Also the giant Thanka, which is rolled out on the afternoon of the first day of the Yoghurt Festival. The monks' public teaching debates in the garden are also impressive (Mon-Sat 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.)

5월 17, 2024, Drepung Monastery and Tsokchen Temple
The "raspberry bush" monastery. Located 10 km outside of Lhasa on a gentle slope. largest monastery in central Tibet (10,000 monks then, about 800 now). Built in 1416. Also by the founder of the Gelupka school. Viewing point on the metal frame for the giant Thanka (1st day of the yogurt festival). Gigantic monastery kitchen! Large assembly hall. The Tsokchen temple touched me like no other. Thank you for that.

5월 16, 2024, Norbulingka Palace
A green oasis in Lhasa. 108 trees have been planted. A bamboo avenue. Created by chance. The Dalai Lama at the time was seriously ill. The hot springs here did him good and so this summer residence slowly came into being. The rooms of the current Dalai Lama are small and simply furnished. Apart from the wall paintings, statues and spiritual objects. Highly recommended The second part of the yoghurt festival with a performance of the Tibetan opera also takes place here in August.
