Rotenturm Castle is a beautiful eye-catcher in the middle of the agricultural landscape. The current owner has extensively restored the building and made it accessible to the public at certain times.

Castle Neudau The original moated castle consists of the outer bailey with a mighty round tower, the gate wing and the south wing, the three-storey residential castle (closed four-wing building around an inner courtyard) and the east wing with the chapel and the entrance. The castle, first mentioned in 1371, dates in its present form from the late 19th century (in the style of the second baroque). Parts of the interior with remarkable ovens from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved. In the park there is a small theater building from the early 18th century. The owners of the castle were the Neubers, from 1500 the Polheim, 1571 - 1706 the Rottal family. Today's owner Franz Karl Kottulinsky. The castle is very well preserved. Neudau received its current facade about 130 years ago.

The core of the castle goes back to a medieval defense tower and was expanded into a manor house in the 16th century under the barons of Königsberg. It was first mentioned in writing in 1591 under the name Künigsperghausen. A coat of arms of the Königsberg family bears the year 1626. The east wing with the arcades and the portico was added in the 18th century under the Batthyány counts, who owned the castle from 1644 to 1918. After that, the castle housed a farming school and a hotel. After extensive renovation work, a health academy was housed here in 2003. The castle used to have a spacious park with a pond and an attached nursery. The castle is currently used by the Burgenland Dental Association and the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.

In 1271 the castle was owned by the Counts of Güssing and, after several changes of ownership, was mortgaged by King Frederick III to the mercenary leader Andreas Baumkircher in 1445. After Baumkircher's execution in 1471, King Ferdinand gave the reversionary fief to Franz Batthyány. The last owner from this line, Ludwig Batthyány, was appointed the first Hungarian Prime Minister on March 17, 1848. After his execution on October 6, 1849, his property and with it the castle came into the possession of the Hungarian Chamber. In 1849, the railway pioneer Franz Schmidt bought the castle. In 1911, ownership changed to Demeter Salesky, who had to hand the castle over to the Hungarian Hermes Bank after the First World War. From 1957 to 1980, the castle belonged to the former Austrian Federal Minister Udo Illig. Since then, it has belonged to the state of Burgenland and is used as a conference center by the Austrian Study Center for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ÖSFK), which also has its headquarters there. Rotenturm Castle was built between 1862 and 1864 by order of the Erdödy count family. After a fire in 1924 and changing owners, Heinz Schiener was able to save the castle with the Federal Monuments Office. After an extensive renovation, it shines in new splendor and can be rented for events. Unfortunately, the castle is not open to the public.

Schlaining Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castle complexes in Austria. The originally Gothic building was supplemented in the course of its development by additions in the Renaissance and Baroque styles. In the inner courtyard of the castle there is a mighty keep with walls up to 8m thick. This is also to commit. Today the castle (owned by the state of Burgenland) includes the Peace Museum, the Study Center for Peace, the Peace Library and event rooms such as the Knights' Hall, the Castle Arena and the moat, hotel and conference center. The castle and all of the rooms, including the inner courtyard, are currently closed for around 18 months for renovation work. I was lucky enough to still visit them. It was a treat
