The castle was first mentioned in 1184 in the register of the Engelberg monastery. The former castle of the Habsburgs and Barons of Grünenberg was destroyed by the Swiss Confederation in 1388. The lake and property passed to Lucerne. In 1605, the present castle was built by Mayor Schnyder von Wartensee. In 1811, it passed to the Eggstein family of Zofingen, who had the chapel, corner towers, and surrounding wall demolished. Several ownership changes followed, including the painter Auguste de Pourtalèse. In 1942, the patrician von Schumacher family acquired it. Since 1998, the castle, island, and lake have belonged to the Sigg family. The castle is not open to the public. Source: Wikipedia.
