RAPPELSTEIN CASTLE RUINS Landmark of Nordenau! The keep of Rappelstein Castle above the village church can be seen from afar! The history of the village of Nordenau begins with the construction of Nordena Castle around 1260, as the seat of the noble lords of Grafschaft. The castle served to secure the old "military road" that led from Cologne via Kassel to Leipzig. At that time, this road was an important long-distance trade route. From the 14th century onwards, disputes between the Counts of Waldeck and the Archbishop of Cologne led to the castle gradually falling into disrepair. In 1965, the Office for Landscape Conservation and Early History gave permission to restore the castle ruins to prevent further deterioration. Today, the ruins on the Rappelstein serve as a viewing platform that offers a special view of the village of Nordenau, the Nesselbach Valley and the Land of 1000 Mountains.

Reckenberg Castle, Reckenberg Castle is a castle-like manor house, built on the remains of a former moated castle, in the winding and rocky Örksche Schweiz valley of the Eder tributary Orke in what is now the municipality of Lichtenfels, Waldeck-Frankenberg district, northern Hesse (Germany). It lies on a mountain spur above the village of Dalwigksthal and signals from above the entry of the Eder tributary Orke into Örksche Schweiz (Waldeckische Schweiz).
