The success of the film "Tatort Falkenlay" inspired the idea of building a concrete replica of the main character, the old Lippi, for the film crew, the community, and guests. Apparently, it's located in the cave of events, and so the idea was born! What should it look like? He prefers to indulge in his favorite pastime: relaxing around the campfire! A friendly neighbor lent his face and hands to create lifelike casts. They constructed the upper body skeleton from strong wire. The legs were made from plumbing pipes and attached to the body. Now the hard work began. Everything had to be filled with scrap paper, wrapped several times, and then rewired. After dressing Lippi in old pants, they could begin the concrete work. Now the fine details of the body were modeled. The head, face, hands, and feet, which had been pre-cast, were placed in their designated places. The masterpiece was complete! With the kind support of the Kennfus volunteer fire department, Lippi then moved to his cave beneath the Falkenlay!

Mining has shaped the village of Altlay and its residents and given the village its name Altlay. In local dialect, a lay is a roofing slate. Anyone who visits the narrow stream valleys around Altlay will not fail to notice striking evidence of mining here and there. Here, at every turn, you come across the remains of what was once a fairly extensive, predominantly small-scale roofing slate mining operation. Slate is still mined in Altlay today. The cheese grotto got its name from the cheese loaves apparently stacked here. The also common naming Elfengrotte does not come from elves, but here was the eleventh mill in the Ueßbachtal.

"The enchanted elf grotto near Bad Bertrich is a popular excursion destination, especially for small GesundLand visitors, because fabulous fairy tales come to life here in front of the inner eye. Sink into legendary stories and old legends for a moment when you visit the small grotto. The cave is located directly on the "HeimatSpur Walking Path Elfengrotte", which is 2.4 km long and can also be mastered by children. Right next door, the Elbesbach waterfall tumbles down with a roar. This place owes its nickname "cheese grotto" to the shape of its Stones reminiscent of round cheese loaves. The grotto was created many thousands of years ago when glowing hot basalt lava flowed from the high volcanoes into the Üssbach valley and created a unique landscape there. When it cools down, the basalt lava solidifies into columns in which horizontal stress cracks developed. Weathering over the centuries has given rise to the shape of stacked cheese loaves, the de give the elf grotto its special look." There are a few smaller “caves” here in the volcanic rock of the Falkenlay. Some interesting finds prove that these caves were built between 2000 and 4000 BC. were probably populated by Stone Age hunters.

Slate mining in Altlay Mining has a long tradition in Altlay. In addition to agriculture, it served as a second pillar for earning a living. In addition to the mining of ores such as lead, copper and zinc, mainly slate was mined mainly for the extraction of roofing slate. In most cases this was done in small working groups of two or three families who leased the mining rights for certain areas from the municipality. The work was very arduous because of the modern equipment; as they are used today, were not available. It was entirely manual work, from driving the tunnels into the mountain to mining the slate blocks. The slate blocks were transported out of the tunnels on a narrow rock railway track with carts to be processed into roofing slate in the Spalthütte. In addition to the family businesses, there was a large amount of slate quarrying in the Hahn community. This was operated by the Rathscheck company from Mayen. This mine was shut down around 1952. There is now slate quarrying again in Altlay. The Theis-Böger company from Bundenbach extracts roofing slate from underground mining in the Giaselrech district. Contrary to the manual work in previous years, almost everything is done with modern machines. Source: Text information board

At the foot of the Falkenlay there are smaller Stone Age caves whose settlement dates back to 4,000 to 2,000 BC. BC by Stone Age hunters was proven through corresponding finds. The Falkenlay is the oldest cinder cone in this volcanic system. During scoria eruptions, chunks of lava of irregular shape and size, called scoria, are ejected from the volcano, which accumulate around the vent and form a characteristically steep and cone-shaped mountain. The approximately 50 m high crater wall can still be seen today. The caves that were populated in the Stone Age can be found here. The caves can be reached via the “Geo-Route Bad Bertrich” hiking trail. Source: https://www.eifel.info/a-steinzeithoehlen

7월 12, 2021, Slate Mining Tunnels on Strimmiger Berg
At the tunnel entrances in the split huts (some of the ruins are still there today), the slate blocks were split into thin slates (layers). The material that cannot be used as roofing slate (“deaf rock”, in some cases over 90% of the extracted material) was deposited in heaps in front of the tunnels and thus allows conclusions to be drawn about the size of the tunnels. In the last months of the war, the slate tunnels served the population as protection from air raids. Today the tunnels are closed with grids because of the danger of collapse, but bats provide welcome protection for wintering. The spoil heaps are an ideal habitat for heat-loving species such as snakes and lizards.

7월 12, 2021, Slate Mining Tunnels on Strimmiger Berg
After the Prussian government had banned traditional straw roofing in the 19th century because of the high risk of fire, roofing slate gained economic importance on the Strimmiger-Berg. The municipalities granted mining permits to individual operators, who in turn employed farmers as day laborers and thus enabled many men to earn additional income until the early 20th century. Horizontal tunnels were manually driven into the mountain in order to break slate blocks and to bring them to the surface with the help of carts. The tools that were available for this were only hammers, chisels and saws, the only light source in the tunnels was carbite lamps. It was therefore a very laborious and very dangerous job, to which there was no alternative for many large families.
