Owned by Eton College, Dorney Lake is an epic watersports and outdoor activities venue. It holds fantastic triathlons each year and was the London 2012 Olympics rowing venue. You don't have to get wet to visit though, and in the surroundings are footpaths and cycle paths so you can admire it from the snugness of your dry clothes.

On an island in the lake, the Music Temple is an elegant, Doric temple with a semi-circular end. Dating from the 1770s it was used as a theatre and the remains of a stage survive inside it. It is still sometimes used for musical entertainments in the summer.

Dorney Lake is a 2,200-metre flat water rowing lake owned by Eton College. Used for international regattas, and indeed the 2012 Olympic Venue for Rowing, Adapted Rowing and Flatwater Canoeing, the Rowing Lake is also available for use by other organisations and clubs. Rowing and canoeing courses and camps are run by the Club as well as team-building activities organised by the hospitality team. Contact the club directly for more information. Dorney Lake also hosts six Triathlons a year, which are very popular with competitors and supporters alike. See the What's On section of this website to find out more. As well as the watersports themselves, the grounds of the lake are open for cyclists, joggers and walkers. As part of the lake's construction, a Park and Arboretum have been developed with an ever-growing array of flora and fauna. https://www.windsor.gov.uk/things-to-do/dorney-lake-p301801

Pondlife The series of ponds which occupy the old clay pits are frequented by both great crested and smooth newts and are heavily vegetated in places. Aquatic vegetation associated with the more open areas includes locally abundant frogbit, with occasional common water-plantain, white water-lily and broadleaved pondweed. The colony of frogbit is particularly notable as it has suffered a severe decline in Britain and appears on the current Red List in the vulnerable category. Other aquatic plants present include common water-starwort, ivy-leaved duckweed, and a small amount of water-violet which is a declining local speciality of ditches and ponds close to the Thames.

At the far end of the Olympic rowing lake in Dorney, you get a real feel for the distance that the Olympic champion competitors row. In the far distance, you can just see the grand new boathouse at the finish line. Dorney Lake is a great facility, owned by Eton College, but often stages rowing events and public triathlons. The public can’t freely use the lake itself, but cycling, walking and running round on the tarmac is always allowed.
