The common medlar (Mespilus germanica) is a traditional fruit tree that has become rather rare today. The medlar grows as a slow-growing, broad-crowned large shrub or small tree, usually reaching a height of 3 to 6 meters. The apple-shaped fruits are only edible after exposure to frost or prolonged storage, as this softens them and reduces their high tannin content. The tree was once widespread in farm gardens and monasteries.

The beach is usually called Paralia Akratas (Akrata Beach) or Paralia Krathiou. The beach stretches for approximately 2.5 km between the mouths of the Krathis River (to the west) and the Tholopotamos River (to the east). It is predominantly a pebble beach with clear, deep water.

In Greek mythology, the god Apollo (also: Apollon) was associated, among other things, with the famous Oracle of Delphi. According to tradition, the last oracle of Pythia (the title of the resident seer/fortune teller) in the second half of the fourth century – i.e., as Christianity was spreading – is said to have read: "Tell the king that the beautifully constructed house has fallen. Phoibus Apollo no longer has refuge, the sacred laurel withers, his springs are forever silent, the murmuring of the waters has fallen silent."
