According to local legend, the pool is bottomless, and home to a sinister mermaid referred to as Jenny Greenteeth. The Doxey Pool mermaid waits to lure unsuspecting waters into her bottomless pool, to their deaths.

Perhaps the aforementioned mermaid has claimed a victim or two because the hi-vis brigade have seen need for a fence to be erected all around the pool. My dog raced ahead in anticipation of being able to have a splash but was gutted to find it fenced off. Bit of a shame

Love the reservoirs at Macclesfield Forest. Great to see the reflections in the water on a calm day.

A lovely easy going walk around Rudyard Lake. You can even catch the small narrow gauge steam train for part of the way.

A great place to park and take in the myriad of walking, running and riding opportunities in this lovely part of Cheshire.

Great little train running along Rudyard Lake. Perfect for a one-way trip on foot and return train ride. (you can pay with card in the station upon arrival)

Wonderful walk along the lake to Hunthouse Woods, you can take one or both ways by the steam train

There is a lovely pub halfway around the reservoir which makes for a perfect resting spot.

Charming little pool, great spot for a rest and refuel.

Beware of cars pulling out of houses, some of driveways are sharp and the cars have to pull out slightly to actually see what’s on the road

Redesmere is a lovely place to stop in the evening as it can provide some lovely sunsets. The climb from here is quite short but the roads are narrow so be wary of cars not wanting to give way. Once you've reached the top grab a drink looking out over the Cheshire Plains.

There are a number of downhill tracks in the forest, don't be tempted to ride down these on gravel bikes unless you have an aggressive tread. Forest floor is mainly rotten pine needles, and whilst it is rideable, even in dry whether it is incredibly slippery

There can't be many viewpoints that beat the Roaches within the UK. Views of the Wrekin, Malverns, Long Mynd and Shropshire Hills. The Cambrian Mountains, Snowdonia and the Clwydians further north. All across the Cheshire plain to Chester and north to Manchester , with the southern Pennines hills rising behind in the distance. It's also fun trying to spot the big disc of the massive Lovel telescope at Jodrell Bank which is easy or hard depending on which way the disc is pointing and if it's a sunny day.

Nice climb from Redesmere along quiet lane to "Ron's Railings". The climb is rewarded by great views across to Jodrell Bank and the Cheshire Plain. Just be aware of other riders and cars coming down round a couple of tight narrow bends. Much better to go up than down this hill as there is a lot of gravel and sand if travelling fast. Continue on at the top to Henbury or Gawsworth, or take first right to Over Alderley via Birtles Lane.

Trentabank Reservoir supplies the town of Macclesfield with drinking water. Although a working environment, Trentabank and the conifer forests are a haven for wildlife. The site has more than 20 breeding pairs of herons and is one of the best places to see them in the Peak District. You can also observe birds of prey, red deer and wading birds at certain times of year.

It is a very unusual find on the walk. Sadly there was a blazing fire here that stretched across the upper tier of The Roaches last summer. All heather and grasses are gone and even the lower nature reserve has had the tree tops badly scorched. A real tragedy. (Jenny Greenteeth sounds like one ugly mermaid.)
