Large historic public park in the heart of Southampton, covering about 365 acres of open grassland, woodland, and ornamental lakes. Originally medieval grazing land, it became a formal public space in the 19th century and remains a vital green area for the city. The Common is home to a wide range of wildlife, including birds and bats, and contains notable features such as the Cemetery Lake, the Ornamental Lake, the Old Cemetery, and the Cenotaph war memorial. *Titanic Engineers' Memorial* The monument was built in honor of the engineers and was unveiled in April 1914. It is made of granite and bronze and depicts the goddess of victory, Nike. 24 engineers, 6 electrical engineers, two boilermakers, a plumber and a clerk. Nobody survived, they all stayed on the sinking ship to maintain the power supply, especially for the pumps. They sent out distress signals and reassured passengers.
