Whitby Harbour is a historic and bustling port at the mouth of the River Esk in North Yorkshire, offering a various attractions, shops, and dining places.

Quite an unusual dam that runs along the entire northern edge of the reservoir, and is wide and low rather than tall and narrow. Parking at either end of the dam.

Head on out to either of the 2 main piers and experience an epic sunrise or sunset!

This can be very muddy at times, plus the gate at the end of the track is very narrow.

A pleasant place to stop for a snack and a rest, especially if the weather is nice.

Small yet picturesque and peaceful tarn just to the south of Goathland on Moss Rigg, useful waypoint/marker on the way up Two Howes Rigg towards Simon's Howe. Good quality track runs all the way to Simon's Howe, relatively easy in the summer but looks as though it could get quite boggy in winter.

Avoid the summer holidays if possible. Early spring and later in the year is so much quieter and enjoyable

Whitby Harbour has everything you need - beautiful views of the River Esk (including the swing bridge), numerous shops, cafes, fish and chips shops, and places to buy souvenirs. In the summer, particularly at weekends, it is likely be very busy.

This is a lovely and serene pond just outside Scarborough. There is a useful car park area, where it'd be easy to stop and give your bike a bit of a breather. Don't fail to walk out onto the fishing platforms to get a good view of the mere - unless they're already occupied by anglers with whom the Mere is quite popular.

Top fish and chips.

Walking the northern bank of the reservoir might give you more peace than anywhere else (certainly more than walking along A171!) - it's a pleasant stroll.

Whitby harbour is the bustling centre of the town with beautiful views on either side of the River Esk. A great place to stop for fish and chips or an ice cream, or maybe even both.

Nice little town, cosy streets. The boulevard on the west side (Pier Road) however has turned into a fair. Too bad.

Peasholm Park is a serene public space within a natural glen. A stream runs through the park which culminates in a lake. Even during the busy summer months the park is quiet and peaceful. Peasholm has an oriental theme and is home to lots of rare trees and flowers. It is free to enter.

Whitby is a traditional seaside town that is dearly loved by young and old alike. With a glorious golden beach, quirky cobbled streets that wind enticingly through old taverns and pubs — frequented by sailors and smugglers in times gone by — and a bustling harbour overlooked by the striking Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey, it is an intriguing and beautiful place. With connections to Captain Cook and Dracula, too, Whitby truly is a place unlike any other.
