This is one of the great Utah plateau crossings: the Wasatch Plateau via Eccles and Huntington Canyons. The scenically most interesting part extends down to Huntington on the east side, which is quite a bit further east than the highlighted section. "Hwy 31 west" is not right. If anything it is east from Fairview. But the Huntington side is actually better, less stark. Here are some more pictures and words: http://www.cyclepass.com/t_put_Hunt_Fair_u.html

Guardsman Pass is a tough but unforgettable climb—steep grades, tight switchbacks, and big elevation gain. The views from the top, at nearly 9,700 feet, are worth every pedal stroke. Expect light traffic on weekdays and smooth pavement for a fast, fun descent.

Climbing the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway northwards offers a challenging ascent towards the high pass near Mount Nebo, the tallest peak in Utah's Wasatch Range. You'll journey through beautiful, quiet canyons and forests over approximately 14-15 miles, gaining around 3,800 ft to reach the very high altitude pass near 9,300 ft. Be prepared for a significant test, especially after the initial gentle miles; this southern approach features sustained steep sections averaging nearly 9% for over 3 miles, with ramps exceeding 11%. Enjoy the scenic mountain views and perhaps taking a short detour to see the unique Devil's Kitchen geological area.

Climbing Empire Pass westwards from Midway on the Guardsman Pass Scenic Backway offers a challenging but scenic ascent into Utah's Wasatch Mountains. Prepare for approximately 11-12 miles of sustained climbing, gaining over 3,000ft to reach the 8,740ft summit. The main climb averages around 5-6%, but features steeper sections, particularly on the initial winding climb out of Midway and in the final push towards the pass, where gradients can reach 8-10%. Along the way you'll enjoy the transition from aspen forests to stunning alpine meadows as you approach the top.

Climbing the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway southwards from Payson, Utah, is a long 22 mile high-altitude journey towards Nebo Pass at over 9,300ft in the Wasatch Range. Prepare for a very sustained ascent gaining nearly 5000ft, averaging a gentle 4-4.5% overall, but featuring long, persistent climbing sections at 5-7% (with ramps hitting 8-10%), especially through Payson Canyon, before reaching rolling terrain on the upper plateau. You'll enjoy stunning scenery transitioning from canyons to aspen forests which are spectacular in fall and high mountain vistas. The Nebo Loop is closed off season due to snow in late April/early May, typically reopening around late May or June.

This challenging climb begins in the picturesque Big Cottonwood Canyon, a stunning alpine valley nestled in the Wasatch Range, and ascends toward Guardsman Pass. The early stretch features a gentle grade, but as you progress, the road becomes steeper with tight, twisting corners that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding canyon. As you near the top, the scenery intensifies, revealing dramatic mountain vistas, with the climb culminating at Guardsman Pass, where the panorama stretches across the valley. The descent is equally thrilling but requires caution due to sharp turns and the potential for hikers or parked cars along the road.
