The Haast Pass is a major crossing on New Zealand's South Island, connecting the west coast with the east coast. If you're cycling from the north, you'll reach the Haast Pass after a long and challenging ride through the mountains. The maximum gradient is 16%! The Haast Pass sits at an altitude of approximately 564 meters above sea level and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the Haast River. The road winds through a beautiful landscape of rocks, forests, and waterfalls. Riding the Haast Pass is a highlight for many cyclists, offering a unique combination of natural beauty and physical challenge. The road is narrow and winding, and the gradients are steep, but the views are well worth the effort. Upon reaching the Haast Pass, you've crossed into New Zealand's South Island and reached the west coast. The landscape changes dramatically here, and you'll find yourself in a world of rocks, forests, and fjords. The Haast Pass is an important part of New Zealand's history and culture, and many cyclists come here to experience the beauty of the scenery and the challenge of the ride. If you're cycling here, be prepared for a demanding but rewarding journey.

Unfortunately, the bridges are currently unusable! To get to the back pool (the blue one), you have to cross the stream. With a swimsuit (which I unfortunately didn't have with me today), it's no problem at all given the moderate water level!

As of March 2025, the Blue Pools are inaccessible because an important bridge is under repair.
