Colorful temple not far from the HuaiYuan Building, when walking along the river towards YunShuiYao Old Town.

The old town of Yanshuiyao. Nestled along the river and connecting the famous HuaiYuan Building at the northern end and the Hegui Building at the southern end of the town.

The largest earthen building in this assembly of Tulou. Built during the Ming dynasty in the very early 1700s, it boast with its massive outer ring and two more inner ring buildings. Like all other buildings it has a shrine at its center. This, and the neighboring buildings, have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008.

View onto the Tulou (= earthen building). Gives a nice impression of the size of these buildings in comparison to the usual village houses. There is a small cobblestone path from the village up to the viewpoint. Requires climbing some stairs. Only few tourist go up here. It is about a 30 minute round trip.

QiaoFu Building is one (of many) earthen buildings in the area and part of the Yongding World Heritage site. It is a family home, built as late as 1962 and measures three storeys high and about 45m in diameter.

Main Entrance to the UNESCO World Hertige site Fujian Yongding Tulou. These buildings are very impressive and worth visiting. This world heritage site is four buildings adjacent to each other. Three are currently open to the public. One is damaged and undergoing repair (as of May 2025). There are more such buildings in the vicinity, but these are the tourist focal point. Most westerns might know these earthen round buildings from the opening scenes in the Disney adaptation of Mulan - only that Mulan actually plays in the north of China where does buildings don’t exist. I guess many tourist (like us) do a day tour from Xiamen. If you organize a private tour by car it will take a little more than two hours. An organized group tour by bus will likely be 2.5~3 hours to reach Yongding. Tour guides offer their services at the main entrance, but chances for an English speaking guide are very slim …

Located in Nanjing County of Fujian Province this earthen building was constructed 1905-1909. It has four storeys measuring up to 13.5 meters.

Hegui Building is another earthworm building in Nanjing County of Fujian. It is rectangular in shape, five storeys high and with 140 rooms. its outer wall thickness is over 1.3m at the base, tapering of to 0.65m at the top. This building was constructed on a soft squishy ground and to support it pine tree trunks have been driven into the ground as a foundation.
