A breeding program in the 1950s saved the species from extinction. With 12 Przewalsi horses that had survived in zoos and animal parks, a breeding program was launched in the late 1950s. It focused on stabilizing these remaining animals and building a healthy population to ensure the survival of the species. Coordination of breeding efforts was improved with the establishment of a stud book in 1959. It is maintained by the Prague Zoo, and the EEP stud book is maintained by the Cologne Zoo.
