Brahehus was built by the imperial regent Per Brahe the Younger in the mid-17th century. The palace was originally intended as a pleasure palace. However, the plans were changed in 1645. The palace was intended to be a widow's residence for Per Brahe the Younger's wife, Kristine Katarina Stenbock. She died a few years later, however. The stately palace was instead used as a guesthouse. In 1708, the palace was destroyed in a fire and has since fallen into disrepair. Restoration work was carried out in the 20th century. On the left side of the floating dock are very tall reeds. Ducks often stay there. During my visit, I even saw a family of ducks with a total of eight young.

A wild “small” climb to Brahehus through the forest, which is a little strenuous, but worth the effort

Lake Vättern is Sweden's second largest lake after Vänern. The water is deep (except in the northern part), very clear and not particularly warm. There are some wonderful bathing spots on the lake, including Vättersvallen in Brevik (with a lovely campsite), Djäknasundet in Karlsborg and, last but not least, Varamo Baths in Motala, Northern Europe's longest inland lake beach.

The Brahe House was built by the imperial regent Per Brahe in the middle of the 17th century. The castle was originally intended as a pleasure palace. In 1645 the plans were changed and it was now to be a widow's residence for Per Brahe's wife. However, she died before it was completed. In 1708 the castle was destroyed in a fire and has been dilapidated ever since.

Both are beautifully situated on Lake Vättern

A beautiful jetty with seating along the sides. A cute pair of ducks were taking a siesta here. A little further up is a fire pit with benches.

Very nice vantage point on the Vättern and the wide country. In any case, it is worth the hardship of climbing up from Gränna. Brahehus is a castle ruin right on the European route E4. Like Gyllene Uttern a few kilometers further south, Brahehus also belongs to Gränna in Småland. Brahehus was once a noble but also quite ostentatious castle. Unfortunately, it only stood in all its glory for around 50 years. Source: https://schwedentipps.se/smaland/brahehus
