You should take a look at what is possible from the outside. A terribly beautiful mix of styles awaits you. A lot of symbolism was also used quite uncritically. "The sculptor Ludwig von Schwanthaler fulfilled a childhood dream by building Schwaneck Castle. After the inauguration in 1843, he used the keep primarily to hold lavish parties." More on the history of the buildings modeled on a castle here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Schwaneck

Be sure to visit the castle while you're there and the gates are open. In addition to the archaeological museum, the castle also offers a free tour of the preserved buildings (thanks to the Free State) and a replica of a historic blacksmith's shop (thanks to energetic, selfless citizens).

You can only look into the garden or the castle from outside through the beautiful grilles. Therefore, the castle, although built by Effner, only makes sense in combination with a walk through the forest cemetery or a stop at Schwaige.

Grünwald Castle is one of the few real medieval castles still preserved around Munich. The castle was once significantly larger, but was then damaged by a landslide on the high bank of the Isar. The castle gained notoriety as the starting point of the Counter-Reformation because the Bavarian rulers, who had previously acted cautiously, met there and decided that Bavaria should remain Catholic despite the church's completely damaged reputation.

Schwaneck Castle is a kind of early medieval cosplay. Herr von Schwanthaler built the castle in the mid-19th century out of sheer enthusiasm for the Middle Ages. The subsequent owners were just as obsessed with the Middle Ages and diligently expanded the self-proclaimed castle. Today the castle belongs to the city, the district youth council is there And next door the youth hostel.

Schwaneck Castle, educational center and youth hostel with nature experience center. The castle was built in 1843 by the sculptor Ludwig von Schwanthaler, who fulfilled a childhood dream with the castle. Unfortunately, he could not enjoy the building for long because he died in 1848. The castle went to his cousin's family. In 1863 it was acquired by Karl Mayer Ritter und Edler von Mayerfels. Further modifications followed. Around 1900 there was another change of ownership. British artist Edith Wentworth Dunbar lived here at the time. The property went to the construction and real estate entrepreneur Jakob Heilmann, later to his son Otto. In 1955 it was acquired by the district of Munich.

The Forstenrieder Castle is located next to the motorway to the south and even if you want to cycle south from the city (Stranberg), this is a first highlight on the tour

The history of the property goes back to around the year 800, when a church in loco qui dicitur Laufzoro is first mentioned. The name refers to a cleared gathering place for game that was already there at that time. Over time, the hamlet became a Schwaige, which was acquired by the Wittelsbach family before 1446. From 1588, there is evidence of a regal horse breeding there. Between 1616 and 1619 Albrecht der Leuchtenberger, brother of the then reigning Duke Maximilian, had Laufzorn Castle built on the grounds of the Schwaige. The complex is now privately owned and unfortunately cannot be visited, but at least you can take a look at the main building from the gate and some information boards on site provide information about the history. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_Laufzorn

The baroque palace Fürstenried near Munich was built between 1715 and 1719 by the builder Joseph Effner on behalf of Elector Max Emanuel as a hunting lodge. Since 1925 the palace has served the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising as a retreat house, school pastoral center and conference venue. From the castle, you can see exactly the twin towers of Munich's Marienkirche via the A95 motorway, which falls as a dead straight line to the castle complex. In 2021, the complex ekes out a rather dreary existence - the house is closed, parts of the building are orphaned and show signs of need for renovation. https://www.erzbistum-muenchen.de/ordinariat/ressort-5-bildung/exerzitienhaus-schloss-fuerstenried

The hilltop castle was mentioned in documents as early as the 12th century. The current building structure mainly dates from the end of the 15th century. Around 1970, a Munich property developer acquired the complex and planned to largely demolish the dilapidated monument. Only the towers would have been preserved in their original form; the castle buildings would be rebuilt as a luxury residential complex. However, the project was prevented by a committed citizens' initiative, which was ultimately able to obtain the castle's purchase by the Free State of Bavaria in 1976. The Grünwald Castle Museum, a branch museum of the State Archaeological Collection, has been housed here since 1979. The castle can be visited; the climb to the tower offers a worthwhile view over the city and forest. http://archaeologie-bayern.de/de/zweigmuseen/gruenwald
