In the Creuse valley lies the picturesque village of Gargilesse-Dampierre. The village is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. And I can see why: the romantic charm of the closely packed houses with their steep, brown-tiled roofs, which surround the castle. Truly artistic, picturesque, and charismatic. It's wonderful to take a walk in this area and have a drink at one of the restaurants. Especially the restaurant at the top, where you have a magnificent view of the village and the castle.

This castle dates back to the 16th century. It is found under the names "la Lande" and "Lalande", so I used the term mentioned on the map, namely "la Lande".

At the exit of Saint Denis de Jouhet, stands a very strange old brick chimney 15 meters high! At the foot, you can see a building that housed coal-powered pumps that were used to pump water drawn from the stream below to the station located less than 1 km away. The water thus arrived at the water tower of the "Jouhet" station and was used to power the steam engines. On old postcards, you can see the chimney and the roof of the building in their environment at the time as well as the station opened on July 1, 1906 on the line from La Châtre to Guéret.

Please note, the path leading to the oak tree is not passable by road bike but no problem by mountain bike or simply on foot.

In the commune of Saint Denis de Jouhet, passing through the Villemort woods, take a little detour into the heart of this forest to discover this dead but quite spectacular oak with its 600 years and its absence of foliage! You can read on the information panel its history which goes back to the year 1405 and the legend of the "Lord of Villemort" and "The Man of the Night".
