A castle that already has modern facilities

Following German reunification and the creation of the state of Thuringia in 1990, the subsequent territorial reform merged the districts of Heiligenstadt and Worbis, with its seat in Heilbad Heiligenstadt, to form the Eichsfeld district on July 1, 1994. The building is located on Friedensplatz.

The Unity Monument stands in front of the Eichsfeld District Administration Office. It bears the following inscriptions on its individual pillars: WE ARE THE PEOPLE WE ARE ONE PEOPLE GERMANY, UNITED FATHERLAND The back of the monument commemorates the many thousands of Heiligenstadt residents who fought for their freedom from the SED dictatorship in 1989/90.

The Mainz Castle is located on the Stiftsberg, a small hill on the western edge of the historic town center of Heiligenstadt, which belonged to the Electorate of Mainz since 1022 and was administered for a long time from Rusteberg Castle. The square in front of the castle is today's Friedensplatz. Neighboring sights are the Church of St. Martin and the Bergkloster. During the time of the Kingdom of Westphalia, the Mainz Castle was the seat of the chief prefect of the Harz department. After the Kingdom of Prussia finally took possession of the Upper Eichsfeld, it became the administrative seat of the Heiligenstadt district. This is where Theodor Storm had his offices during his time as a district judge in Heiligenstadt. With the district reform in the GDR, it became the seat of the Heiligenstadt district council. Today the building is the seat of the Eichsfeld district administration office. The castle complex consists of 4 parts: the main building, an annex, the former commercial buildings of the Oberamtshaus and the former savings bank, which was rebuilt in the 19th century. The baroque building was constructed with sandstone blocks. The main facade above the main portal has two balconies and a round gable with the coat of arms of Elector Philipp Karl von Eltz-Kempenich. The Laurentius Chapel was refurbished in the main building and was accessible from the outside. The castle complex on the Stiftsberg is surrounded by a high wall from the lower part of the city. Unfortunately, nothing of the castle complex remains, but the moat is still clearly visible.

A worthwhile hiking destination, there is nothing left of the castle, but you can easily imagine how it stood here. A good resting place, the overhanging trees, the view and the ditch or cut into the shell limestone are interesting.
