You can see the castle beautifully from the other side of the Weser, but if you drive over the bridge (Blue Wonder) and keep to the left you come to Hehlen Castle. And if you're lucky the gates are even open. An absolute eye-catcher.

Everything is closed, only a view from the outside through the fence is possible. But in front of the castle there is a good restaurant "Schlosswirtschaft".

The castle of the Counts of Hallermund was first mentioned around 1189, although they only owned a small dominion of 55km². They did not enjoy their castle for long, Ludolf and Wilbrand pledged it to the bishop of Hildesheim. Later it became the property of the Guelphs, was temporarily owned by the Count of Spiegelberg and was part of all sorts of disputes, feuds and robberies. It was probably finally demolished around 1435, which explains why there is really not a single small wall left here. Only depressions and funnels on the edge indicate the cellar and building. A castle is said to have stood here for a short time. The ascent is very steep and very slippery with a little moisture. We think the climb is not worth it as there is nothing to see at the top.

The moated castle Hehlen in Hehlen in the district of Holzminden is a moated castle built for representation purposes, which is one of the earliest castles in the style of the Weser Renaissance. The castle was built from 1579 to 1584 by Colonel Fritz von der Schulenburg and his wife Ilse von Saldern. It was owned by the von der Schulenburg family until 1956. In 1958 it was bought by the owner of the Hanover company Machwitz Kaffee, whose family still owns it today
