While down in the Rheinwald, in Sufers, traffic rumbles on the A13, up here you can enjoy the peace and romance of the Cufercal hut. Popular with hikers and bikers, it is the only SAC hut in the Beverin Nature Park, where the ibex was reintroduced in 1954. The half-dozen small lakes in the immediate vicinity are particularly attractive. In winter, the terrain is suitable for easy ski and snowshoe tours. Reservations can be made online by 6:00 p.m. the evening before at the latest under “Prices/Reservations”.

Easily reachable by MTB, path S0.

A mountain inn with nostalgic charm. The food is good and plentiful, the rooms are homely but without a bathroom, the hosts are committed and friendly. The inn is the terminus of the post bus line through the Safiental.

Driftwood ball reminds us of the destructive power. Reto Hänny, writer from Tschappina: Text excerpt from “Chiaroscuro” [p. 162 – 163] (1994): When the rumble rolled down the ravine? Can you remember the dull rumbling, the shaking under your feet; or do you only know all of this from your grandfather’s stories? [...] Pieces of land, hills, then the whole slope, begin to slide, to sag, slowly, barely visible at first, barely a tremor in the branches, then, if you look a moment later, suddenly more quickly, they begin to rise up, to fall over, alders and firs, wedging themselves together, are thrown together like Mikado sticks, stones, splintering wood, fences and broken trunks, whose bare roots protrude from the blue-black mush, clawing in vain for support in the rain-shaded air, dancing over the ditch and down on the mudslide [...]" Trees, rocks, houses, nothing on the Heinzenberg was safe from the raging mountain stream Nolla. The Nolla is a stream with extraordinary power, which shaped the landscape over a wide area and taught the inhabitants of Heinzenberg and Domleschg to fear. When the water level was high, the Nolla carried so much debris, such as rubble or driftwood, down from the Heinzenberg that it literally piled up to form a dam in front of the valley floor, until the force of the water swept these walls away again, triggering a strong flood wave.

The Alp Nursera above Ausserferrera can be reached from two sides. In addition to the steep climb from Ausserferrera, you can also reach the alp from the Parsagna above the Rofla. Goats and cattle graze on the alp in the warm months. If you're lucky, you'll see the alpine farmers bringing the milk down to the valley on a small milk cable car. The views are breathtaking and the flora and fauna will put a smile on your face.

A wonderful place to unwind. If you have the opportunity, spend a night or two there. Melanie's food is delicious and the rooms are very cozy. I'd love to come back.
