Elkofen Castle, also known as Elkofen Castle, Unterelkofen, Ölkofen, is one of the best preserved castles in Upper Bavaria and is located in the town of Unterelkofen. The castle is still inhabited today by the Rechberg-Rothenlöwen family, who owned it between 1664 and 1732 and acquired it again in 1871. Nothing is known about the early history of the castle complex. According to a document from the early 13th century that has since been recognized as forged, Hallgraf Engelbert von Attel moved his ancestral seat from Limburg Castle to his moated castle, which already existed at the time, in the middle of the 12th century. The previous building of the castle chapel was mentioned in 1137. In 1247, after a 17-week siege, the castle and town of Wasserburg were conquered by the duke's son Ludwig (later Ludwig II the Strict). Since then, Wasserburg Wittelsbacher owned. Late Gothic hilltop castle, which was built in the 10th century and is still inhabited today. Therefore not open to the public, but also pretty to look at from the outside, even in the dark and February rain 😉.

The castle / castle Elkofen is one of the best preserved castles in Upper Bavaria. The castle tries to hide behind large trees on the castle hill, but two approaches give you a nice view of the walls and the tower. In fact, the castle makes a very well-kept impression, but you are not allowed to look inside, because the complex is privately owned by the Rechberg-Rothenlöwen family, who owned the castle between 1664 and 1732 and bought it again in 1871. Clearly a case of real love... The castle is surrounded by a wide and deep, formerly water-filled moat and is of considerable proportions. The oldest part of the castle is the keep, which dates back to the early Middle Ages. Further information and pictures: http://burgenseite.de/html/elkofen.html

Elkofen Castle is privately owned, but you can walk around the castle and look at it from all sides. The location is interesting because the Schlossberg piles up in a large funnel. The castle park with pond is located in this funnel. Elkofen is a well-protected hilltop castle, but it is not really visible from afar because it only insignificantly towers over the surrounding area. This rather hidden location was very helpful during the Thirty Years' War because the castle was not discovered by the Swedes. That is the popular opinion. However, it may also be that the Swedish troops were already severely weakened at this time and have therefore given up a siege. And here's a hint for lovers who are looking for a wedding location: You can get married in the chapel at Elkofen Castle. In addition, there are sometimes concerts in the castle courtyard, which take place in the church of St. Michael in Alxing when it rains. Dates are published in the city magazine of the city of Ebersberg.

The first known owner of the Schechen castle estate was Ortlieb der Dorfpekch zu Schechen around 1400. At that time, the castle estate was probably a larger farm. A new building was erected in the second half of the 16th century. The von Dannel family (also Daniel or Tannel), who held the noble seat (later Hofmark) Schechen from 1419 to 1628, followed as owners. This was followed by the Schwabach, the Schrenkh and finally the canon Georg Ignaz von Schiestl. The commoner Jakob Krämer (Kramer, Kranner) bought the aristocratic residence on July 27, 1809. Over the next 100 years, the owners changed frequently. On June 13, 1902, the Rotterdam brewer Georg Kaiser bought the property and used the building, which had already been converted into an inn in 1870. On January 20, 1987, the community of Schechen bought the Schechen Castle from Brigitte Wasum and converted it into the town hall.
