If you've ever tried to plan hiking in Carteret County, you know how quickly the options can feel overwhelming. With so many coastal paths, tideland trails, and natural areas, it's tough to know which routes are genuinely worth your time and effort. That's where we come in. Our komoot community has explored, mapped, and reviewed these trails, and we've curated this guide to save you the guesswork and point you straight to the best of the best.

Hiking here is all about embracing the unique coastal character of North Carolina. Expect generally flat terrain winding through maritime forests, marshlands, and sandy paths, often with views of the Atlantic Ocean or intercoastal waterways. A significant portion of the trails are found within the Croatan National Forest, offering a different feel with swamps and pine savannas. While most routes are easy, there are a few moderate options if you're looking for a longer day out. For the most comfortable experience, we recommend hiking between October and April to avoid the hotter, more humid months.

If you only do one hike, make it the Taylor Creek loop from Carrot Island. This 4.5 miles (7.2 km) route is our pick for its fantastic coastal views and the chance to spot wild horses. For a family-friendly win that offers a true taste of the tidelands, the Tidelands Trail is an easy 1.4 miles (2.3 km) path that's perfect for nature observation. Ready to explore? Dive into these routes and more, all tried and tested by over 90 hikers in the komoot community.
