Hörder Burg, also known as Hörde, was built as a moated castle in the 12th century in the immediate vicinity of the Emscher. It is the ancestral seat of the Hörde noble family. Not far from the castle, at the confluence of the Emscher and Hörder Bach, was an economically important grain mill.

The approximately 24-hectare lake, 1.2 km long and around 320 m wide, has become a small oasis of relaxation and sport. It is hard to believe that there was no lake here at the turn of the millennium, not even an open area, but a fully functioning steel mill with incredible dimensions.
