The reward in the tavern for this journey alone is worth the trip. The journey is a great experience for young and old alike.

On the old road there is a covered viewpoint to the valley of the dead. Those who dare to venture further forward (sometimes the wind blows so hard here that you can hardly stand upright) sees the green bottom of the gorge, which winds through the rocks like a snake.

This place feels like the end of the world. It is a great finish point for hiking as you can eat and drink in one of the very cosy taverns directly at the beach.

Kato Zakros is known for the archaeological site of the Minoan Palace of Zakros. After the excavation was completed, the remains of the building were made accessible to the public. This led to the establishment of several taverns and accommodations on the coast, the Bay of Zakros (Όρμος Ζάκρου Ormos Zakrou), east of the palace area. In addition to this tourist attraction, the place is the starting or ending point of the European long-distance hiking trail E4 in Crete, which leads from Kato Zakros through the gorge of the dead up to Epano Zakros (Επάνω Ζάκρος, Upper Zakros'). After the tour through the gorge, swimming at Zakros Beach is nice. But especially at noon, when the bus tourists arrive, it's already "tight". It is nice to sit in one of the taverns, right by the sea, to enjoy at least one Frappé.

The narrow beach is well suited for a quick refreshment.
