In winter months the lake reflects the snow of the surrounding peaks. Walk through the Harris Saddle to the Harris Saddle Shelter.

Lovely little side track off the Harris saddle shelter, where you can drop off your packs to make it a little easier. We went in October, there was still snow on the route up. Would recommend crampons if this is the case, as sections can be steep. Despite the snow it was fairly easy to follow the route marker poles to the peak. The views were incredible down to the lake and around at the snow capped mountains. Then we popped back down for lunch and a hot drink at the shelter

A great walk I will not forget. Tip do not go in high season. All huts were open after the end of the high season and did not have to be booked.

At the end of the day trail (3-6h return) there are the Routeburn waterfall and 2 more Routeburn huts (lower and upper), where you can book a night or even camp. The trail leads from the two huts over two passes even further past lakes to the watershed (Devide) in the valley to Milford Sound (3-4 days). In the Glenorchy Valley, there are other hiking opportunities (easy trails to challenging mountain peaks tracks). Lord of the Rings fans will also get their money's worth (Isengard, Lothlórien Paradise, Diamont Lake, Middle-Earth Forest, Mt. Earnsburn, Boromir's Fate River Earnsburn Gorge, ...)
