A dam in the east damms up the Kleiner Brombachsee, and its level fluctuates only slightly. The storage target is 410.6 m above sea level. The area is a designated nature reserve and has the cadastral number NSG500.060.[2] The name comes from the Grafenmühle, which disappeared with the construction of the Großer Brombachsee. The nature reserve stretches for around 2.6 kilometers along the southern bank of the Großer Brombachsee, from the dam of the Kleiner Brombachsee to Ramsberg. With over 89 hectares, it is the largest of the nature reserves on Lake Brombachsee. The majority of the area is occupied by open water and dry spruce and pine forests. The trees protect the sensitive wet areas in the central part from disruptive influences. The western part is considered to be the most ecologically valuable. Several springs arise there. Extensive stands of reeds alternate with willow bushes and various individual trees. The dense reeds are home to nurseries for frogs, toads and fish and offer protection to breeding birds.
