8월 3, 2025, Border Trail (Sentier Frontalier)

Great trail, starting with a nice terrain of small stones and pine needles interspersed with a few steps and a small technical climb, then at the bottom it becomes steep on more difficult terrain, with a few hairpins. Note that there is an escape route on the right about 3/4 of the way down, very little visible. Rating S2.

A long stretch of single trail. Unfortunately, I didn't always find the way. It's still recommended, though. It's deep in the forest, so it might be better to ride in pairs. A mountain bike is absolutely essential.

Dangerous!!! Be careful, even for an experienced level, the gullied crevasses make a large part of this section impassable!! You have to push and contort yourself in the crevasses... the horror...

Orpierre is a tiny, pretty village at an altitude of 700 m with around 300 inhabitants in the middle of the cliffs. It has everything you need. A good starting point for hiking, cycling and climbing.

Black volcanic rock??? No, it is marl, therefore sedimentary, called here roubines (or robine, or elephant skin, or black earth)

the singletrack section is completely destroyed by the rains and the frequent passages of mountain bikes, the trail has been transformed into a monorail, sometimes very deep which prevents any control of the mountain bike, the pedals touch everywhere. Route taken on 01/26/24

An exhilarating section of switchback singletrack that descends down to near the lake's edge. It's continuously steep for a kilometre, but although not overly technical, it does require some good handling skills.

To get to this trail you have to go up from Barcelonnette along a good forest road with beautiful views to the Col des Aralis and then you will simply continue on your mountain bike down. At the top it is steep with some tight bends, which will be slippery when wet. After that, it becomes smoother all the way back to the valley. The top part is a very steep and technical descent, with many hairpin turns. Some parts are very exposed.

Maximum point reached by both the road (in summer) and the chairlift (in winter) In all seasons, with good weather, a 360° spectacle guaranteed on the splendid peaks of the Dauphiné! the climb remains manageable up to approximately 100 m. below the arrival square of the lifts, here you arrive in double figures and you also need to push the bike a little, but the show pays off in a big way! for the descent you can choose the road or a route (S1-S2) which starts just below and which roughly follows the same itinerary. The road also has some challenging sections (uneven surfaces, potholes and steep sections) but overall it remains an S1. I haven't been able to evaluate the other tracks that start on the side of the dirt road, but I think there is something for all tastes... the only way is to try them!

Blue trail, built, lots of berms but too narrow to ride them as such, so very slow and not very fluid. Unfortunately also heavily washed out by rain, gutters everywhere. The red trail, which starts 300m earlier, is nicer to drive.

Hiking/mountain biking trail at the base, but on the surface generally accessible in gravel with a little piloting technique. Some passages, especially in the scree require a little finesse but nothing impossible or dangerous. Your efforts will be rewarded with exceptional panoramas.

The Wasteland the Beauty of May The creation of the Friche has enabled the district to retrain, and to offer the inhabitants of the arrondissement, and the people of Marseille, a real cultural and economic center. To better understand the birth of the Friche, we must go back to the second half of the 1980s. Gaston Deferre, then mayor of Marseille, had decided to restructure the cultural life of Marseille and give it a new impetus. Apart from these two exceptions – the Théâtre de la Criée directed at the time by Marcel Maréchal and the Ballet National de Marseille directed by Roland Petit – Marseilles indeed had one of the smallest cultural budgets in France and had no large-scale project. Culture is today at the heart of the Wasteland. In particular, it hosts the Mucem's resource conservation center, which provides access to the Mucem's archives, library and documentation. The Goethe Institut Marseille is also present at La Friche. It is the globally active cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Institute promotes the knowledge of the German language abroad and the maintenance of international cultural collaborations. Port city, commercial city, working-class city, Marseille and its city councilors, throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, paid little attention to culture, this function being traditionally devolved to the rival Aix-en-Provence. The construction of the wasteland has changed the image of a culturally neglected city. A true place of creation and innovation It is both a workspace for its 70 resident structures (350 artists, producers, employees who work there daily) and a place of dissemination (600 public artistic proposals each year, workshops dedicated to young audiences, major festivals) . With 450,000 visitors per year, 2500m2 of exhibition space, 6 concert halls, 2 performance halls, shared gardens, a restaurant, a crèche, a bookstore, an 8000m2 roof terrace and more than 600 events per year, the Friche is a cosmopolitan place and vector of meeting and sharing, like the Phocaean city. All year round, the Friche la Belle de Mai offers a complete cultural program. Open to all, you can stroll along the “green wasteland” (the green space of the place), go through the playground of “street art” artists, or even stop for a drink at the “Café de La Room”, open every day. For skateboarders of all ages and all levels, the Skatepark de la Friche is a must. It is a one-of-a-kind piece of equipment, designed by the Constructo agency, which specializes in skate park engineering. It offers many modules dedicated to the “street” practice of skateboarding. Very popular with riders from the city, the Skatepark de la wasteland is worth the detour. If you are peckish, “Les Grandes Tables” de la Friche invites you to taste seasonal products full of flavors. More than a restaurant, “Les Grandes Tables” is a place of meeting, culinary and cultural sharing and reflection on cooking and food. Several projects have been set up: The Farmer's Market on Monday evening, Les grandes Carrioles, or even street food as a duo: chef / artist. For years, La Friche has become a cultural reference for the city of Marseille, where everyone can create their bubble and experience a unique moment. The project highlighted the importance of cultural spaces in the city, and brought to the fore the creativity and innovative ideas of Marseilles minds.

Orpierre has two camp sites: "Les Princes d'Orange" which is a bit deluxe with swimming pool and chalets and a "family and kids" vibe to it. "Les Noyers" just next to it (and sharing the same reception office) is much cheaper, with very basic facilities (but perfectly clean and agreeable, more laid back and a "climbing / hiking / mountain-biking" vibe. Orpierre also has its own municipal swimming pool. Another very nice camp-site is "Les Catoyes" about 4km up the road towards Laborel. Live bands on Monday evenings in the summer!
