The fort dates back to the 19th century and takes its name from a rock that is said to look like a praying monk - an impressive backdrop in any case.

The short detour is worth it: the ocean view is magnificent. There's a bit of a lack of information on site, but it's definitely worth a look.

Concarneau is a very beautiful town with a great market. There is a circular trail following in the footsteps of Inspector Dupin.

8월 2, 2024, Fort de la Pointe des Espagnols
When Napoleon I noted the problems of defending the French coasts, he decided to implement a vast fortification program. Around a hundred standardized structures, called “model 1811 towers and redoubts”, will be built. One of them was raised in 1812 at Pointe des Espagnes. The point evolved according to the performance of the artillery and the fortifications were improved until the end of the 19th century. The model tower will remain unchanged until the German occupation. The Germans deployed numerous bunkers around the perimeters and leveled the fort's firing platform and deprived it of its parapets and bretèches. https://www.cestenfrance.fr/fort-de-la-pointe-des-Espagnes-1812/

With the Ville Close, Concarneau is a must during a holiday in Brittany. The many small shops with original art items, as well as the cafes and creperies invite you to visit. The new part of Concarneau is also worth seeing, especially the area near the Port de la Croix.

Today, only ruins remain. Fortified by Vauban at the twilight of the 17th century, Fort de l'Aber was nevertheless a key element of defense against the English. Under the dense vegetation, other ruins remain, this time dating from the Second World War.

10월 9, 2023, Fort de Bertheaume
Built by Vauban in the 17th century on a rocky islet to monitor the port of Brest. Its geographical position allows it to always have an eye on the entrance to the Goulet de Brest, an arm of the sea which connects the harbor of Brest to the Atlantic Ocean. Today the fort is accessible by a footbridge and can be visited in summer. For many centuries, the harbor of Brest attracted the desires of invaders. Since the Middle Ages, protection posts have been set up on the coasts to control its entry. The most effective of them: Bertheaume, a rocky islet located thirty meters from the shore, in Plougonvelin. In the 17th century, around 1690, at the request of Louis XIV, Vauban built a formidable fort there, which would be used militarily until 1944.

The V45 cycle path leads right through the narrow streets 🤣 either push or, better yet, park your bike in front of the city walls. Unfortunately very crowded but a walk over the city wall is highly recommended 🖖

8월 28, 2023, Châteauneuf-du-Faou
Bathed by the Alder, the town of Châteauneuf-du-Faou is an ideal stopover on the Nantes-Brest canal. Below, a campsite and a bistro await you. If you want more, you can always tackle the steep climb that brings you downtown. The shops are more numerous there and, on Thursday afternoon, the weekly market is held there.
