Originally, the place invaded by marshes was called Courmanblain , and Saint Bernard installed a first group of Cistercian monks there in 1134, responsible for clearing this space and building the abbey there. Nowadays, it is the remains of the building that you will discover, because due to its proximity to the Chemin des Dames , the abbey suffered very heavy damage during the Nivelle offensive during the First World War .

At lunchtime, we never encountered anyone in the villages on our journey through Champagne. It was deserted and quiet. Only occasionally did we catch the smell of food.

During the First World War, Cerny-en-Laonnois was a strategic point along the Chemin des Dames, a ridge fiercely contested by French and German troops. In September 1914, the village was taken by the Germans, who used it as a defensive post. They dug deep underground networks in the limestone, which served as shelters and munitions stores. In the spring of 1917, the area became the scene of the Nivelle Offensive, a large-scale French attack that resulted in heavy losses and eventually led to mutinies within the French army. Cerny-en-Laonnois was completely destroyed by artillery fire and fighting. After the war, the village was rebuilt a little further south. Today, the military cemeteries, the memorial chapel and the “Lanterne des Morts” bear witness to the immense human suffering that took place here.

A remarkable remnant of what was once a large and important abbey. Caesar, Napoleon and German troops are said to have passed through this area during the First World War.

This abbey, which was founded in 1134 by St. Bernard, was severely damaged in a bombardment in 1917. The best preserved buildings are the pantry, the refectory of the lay brothers, the chapter house and the monks' hall. The foundations of the abbey church and the inn are still visible. Next to the garden with medicinal plants there is an exhibition space. Surrounding it is the monastic forest of Vauvelair, which covers 1000 hectares.

The Étang des Moines lake is one of the four ponds that were dug by the monks of Liessies Abbey at the end of the 17th century. Covering an area of approximately 20 hectares, it is home to various species of fish, such as carp, pike, perch, roach and tench. The lake is also a haven for wildlife, particularly birds, such as herons, ducks, coots and kingfishers. You can appreciate the tranquility and beauty of the lake from different viewpoints, such as the wooden bridge or the picnic area.

The church dates from the middle of the 13th century. Under the Old Regime, the parish came under the diocese of Soissons, Archdeaconry of Christianity and deanery of Vailly). At the end of the 19th century, Mademoiselle Rostan paid large sums to raise the monument damaged by the outrage of the years. It was badly damaged during the withdrawal of German troops at the end of the summer of 1918. The church was restored under the supervision of the architect of the Historic Monuments Lucien Sallez from 1921 to 1925, then from 1930 to 1932, while Émile Brunet and Jean Trouvelot worked on the masonry and the covering of the transept in 1927.

A vestige of a glorious past, this Sistercian abbey was founded in 1134. Its proximity to the Chemin des Dames caused it heavy damage during the First World War. This site is now peaceful, is at the crossroads of 2 marked hikes. Ideal for a picnic.

8월 11, 2021, Abbaye de Vauclair

The abbey of Vauclair (or also Vauclerc) is a former abbey of Cistercian monks, located on the territory of the commune of Bouconville-Vauclair. It was founded in 1134 and destroyed in 1917 during the war.

The monastery was founded in 1134 by Bernhard von Clairvaux and was a daughter monastery of the Clairvaux primary abbey. Because of the rapid growth of the abbey, a new abbey was built in the 12th century. Vauclair founded the daughter monasteries Le Reclus (1142) and La Charmoye (1167). The monastery suffered during the Hundred Years War and the wars of the 16th and 17th centuries, but unlike most monasteries in France, it never fell into the coming. The monastery was rebuilt in the 17th century. Most of the buildings remained intact until after the French Revolution, in which they were divided among various new owners. The fighting at the Chemin de Dames in 1917 brought severe destruction, especially to the construction of the conversions. After the First World War, the ruins were used as a quarry. Anselme Dimier began excavations in 1966. In Vauclair there is a medicinal herb garden and a garden for old types of fruit. The complex is maintained by the Association des Amis de Vauclair.
